Chapter 3 – The Lie That Almost Became a Funeral
By nightfall, detectives had secured both the mansion and the funeral home.
Doctors confirmed what stunned everyone.
Evelyn had not died.
She had suffered a rare medical condition that dramatically slowed her heartbeat and breathing, making them difficult to detect during a brief examination.
She had regained partial consciousness inside the sealed coffin.
Unable to shout, she had used the last of her strength to tap against the wood.
Detective Laura Bennett interviewed Rosa.
"Why did you break the coffin?"
Rosa wiped away tears.
"For three nights I cleaned Mrs. Harrington's room."
She hesitated.
"Every night, I heard faint knocking from inside."
The detective frowned.
"From inside her bedroom?"
Rosa nodded.
"I told Mr. Harrington."
"What did he say?"
"He told me grief was making me imagine things."
Then Rosa remembered something else.
"On the morning of the funeral..."
She reached into her apron pocket.
"I found this."
It was a small digital voice recorder beneath Evelyn's bed.
The battery was nearly dead.
Detectives pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Evelyn's weak voice emerged.
"If anyone hears this... I didn't collapse naturally."
Heavy breathing followed.
"I drank the tea Richard gave me."
Another pause.
"I couldn't move..."
"...but I could hear everything."
Silence.
Then Richard's voice appeared clearly.
"The doctors will believe it's cardiac arrest."
Another woman laughed softly.
"It will all be yours."
The recording ended.
The interview room fell silent.
Police immediately searched Richard's office.
Inside a locked safe they found forged insurance documents, evidence of a secret relationship with his business partner, and emails discussing plans to take control of Evelyn's company after her funeral.
When officers arrived to arrest Richard, he attempted to leave through a private garage.
He was stopped before reaching his car.
As the handcuffs clicked shut, he looked toward the ambulance carrying Evelyn.
