Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT ANDREW LOST CONTROL

Andrew was indicted on charges related to stalking, coercive conduct, assault allegations, and violation of the protection order.

Additional investigations remained open.

His attorney negotiated his surrender.

He never appeared.

By midnight, police could not locate him.

At 12:37 a.m., Mara woke me.

“Get dressed.”

I sat up.

“What happened?”

“Andrew’s missing.”

Fear entered before I fully understood.

“Where’s my mother?”

“Protected.”

“Ethan?”

“Secure.”

I hated that she knew I would ask.

We moved to an interior safe room while investigators searched locations connected to Andrew.

His apartment was empty.

His car was found near the East River.

His phone was switched off.

At 1:15 a.m., Ethan called through the internal line.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

I sat on the floor.

“What if he comes here?”

“He won’t.”

“You can’t know that.”

“No.”

He paused.

“But there are fourteen people between you and every entrance.”

I closed my eyes.

“That’s not normal.”

“Nothing about tonight is normal.”

At 2:08 a.m., the building security system detected an unauthorized elevator override from the parking garage.

Mara stood instantly.

My blood went cold.

“Is it him?”

“We don’t know.”

The lights changed.

Security doors sealed.

A voice came through Mara’s radio.

“Possible suspect on level P3.”

Then another.

“Vehicle gate breach.”

Mara moved me farther inside.

I heard nothing for almost thirty seconds.

Then three sharp impacts sounded somewhere beyond the wall.

Not gunshots.

A door.

Someone was forcing a door.

Mara drew her service weapon but kept it low.

“Behind me.”

A voice came over the radio.

“Suspect identified.”

My heart stopped.

“Vaughn.”

I felt the room tilt.

Andrew had come to Carter Tower.

After all his lawyers.

All his statements.

All his claims that I was unstable.

He had come himself.

The next minutes happened in fragments.

Security officers moving through corridors.

Elevators locked.

Police approaching.

Ethan ordered to remain upstairs.

Andrew reaching a stairwell.

A security camera catching him carrying a small bag.

Then his voice came through the emergency intercom.

“Ava.”

I froze.

Mara stared at the speaker.

“Ava, I know you can hear me.”

He sounded exhausted.

Not polished.

Not heroic.

Real.

“You made your point.”

I said nothing.

“You embarrassed me.”

His voice cracked.

“You took my hospital.”

“My patients.”

“My life.”

Mara whispered, “Do not answer.”

Then Andrew said the one thing that made my fear disappear.

“I gave you everything.”

Rage rose inside me.

I stepped toward the intercom.

Mara touched my arm.

“You don’t owe him this.”

“I know.”

I pressed the button.

“No, Andrew.”

Silence.

“You took everything.”

His breathing became audible.

“I loved you.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“No.”

“I protected you.”

“You controlled me.”

“I was going to marry you.”

“I know.”

My voice steadied.

“That was the plan.”

Andrew stopped speaking.

He knew I had seen the files.

“You had no right to go through my things.”

The absurdity almost made me laugh.

“You tracked me.”

“You copied my messages.”

“You wrote my resignation letter.”

“You planned to take my salary.”

“And you’re angry that investigators searched a locker.”

His voice became sharper.

“You think Carter is better?”

“This isn’t about Ethan.”

“It was always about him.”

“No.”

I pressed closer to the intercom.

“It was about you.”

“You lost me because of what you did.”

Not because of Ethan.

Not because of Lena.

Not because of Rachel.

Not because of the hospital.

Andrew had spent his life blaming everyone except himself.

I would not help him do it anymore.

His voice dropped.

“If I can’t fix this, neither can you.”

Mara’s eyes sharpened.

Police shouted somewhere outside.

A struggle followed.

Then the intercom went dead.

Minutes later, a security officer entered.

“He’s in custody.”

My knees gave out.

Mara caught me.

“What was in the bag?”

I asked.

The officer hesitated.

“A passport.”

“Cash.”

“Medication.”

“And a loaded handgun.”

I stared at him.

May you like

For the first time, the truth of what might have happened became larger than fear.

I sat on the floor and cried until morning.
