Chapter 14 - The Last Secret
Six months later, Rafael’s trial began.
The evidence appeared overwhelming.
Recorded conversations.
Financial documents.
Witness testimony.
The poisoned patch used on Esteban.
Security footage from the tunnel.
Still, Rafael remained confident.
His attorneys claimed every recording had been manipulated.
They argued Paulina and Lucía were unreliable witnesses.
Then Rafael produced one final secret.
A sealed document allegedly signed by Alejandro Villaseñor.
It stated that Diego was not his biological son.
If true, Diego had no right to the family trust.
Valentina’s inheritance would collapse.
The courtroom erupted.
Beatriz turned white.
Diego looked at her.
“Is it true?”
She did not answer immediately.
That silence was enough to cause panic.
Outside, financial markets reacted within minutes.
The company’s stock fell.
Reporters surrounded the courthouse.
Rafael smiled from the defense table.
Marisol leaned toward Diego.
“Look at me.”
He did.
“Whatever that paper says, you are Valentina’s father.”
“But if it is true—”
“It changes money. Not family.”
The court ordered a DNA comparison using preserved medical samples from Alejandro.
Results would take several days.
Beatriz finally agreed to speak.
Years earlier, before marrying Alejandro, she had loved another man.
She became pregnant.
The man died in an accident before Diego was born.
Alejandro knew.
He married Beatriz anyway and raised Diego as his own.
“You are not his biological son,” she said. “But he chose you.”
Diego absorbed the truth quietly.
“Why did you never tell me?”
“Because in our world, blood was used as a weapon.”
“And silence protected me?”
“I believed it did.”
Rafael’s plan became clear.
He had kept the secret as a final way to destroy Diego.
But the trust contained another provision.
Any child legally acknowledged and raised by Alejandro retained full inheritance rights, regardless of biology.
Rafael had overlooked it.
Diego remained the legal heir.
Valentina remained protected.
The final DNA result confirmed Beatriz’s story.
For one moment, Diego grieved the father he had believed shared his blood.
Then he remembered Alejandro’s recorded message.
Do not repeat my failure.
Family had never been only biology.
It was choice.
On the final day of trial, Diego testified.
Rafael stared at him.
“Your entire life is a lie,” Rafael said as Diego passed the defense table.
Diego stopped.
“No.”
He looked toward Marisol and Valentina.
“My life began when the lies ended.”
The jury found Rafael guilty on every major charge.
Octavio received a separate conviction.
Lucía accepted responsibility and received a reduced sentence due to coercion and cooperation.
Paulina was sentenced to several years in prison, with mandatory psychological treatment and community restitution after release.
The courtroom emptied.
Outside, Marisol found Diego standing alone near the steps.
“You won,” she said.
“No one won.”
“Rafael cannot hurt her again.”
“That is enough.”
Valentina ran toward him wearing a yellow coat.
Diego lifted her.
She touched his face.
“Mamá says Grandpa Alejandro chose you.”
“Yes.”
“I choose you too.”
Diego laughed through tears.
Marisol looked at him.
“So do I.”
He went still.
“What?”
She stepped closer.
“I am not saying everything is healed.”
“I know.”
“I am not saying I want the old life.”
“I do not either.”
“But I want to build a new one.”
Diego lowered Valentina to the ground.
Then he knelt before Marisol.
Crowds nearby began whispering.
Cameras lifted.
Marisol shook her head.
“Do not make this a performance.”
Diego smiled.
He did not pull out a ring.
He only held her hand.
“Then no performance.”
He stood.
“Come home when you are ready.”
Marisol looked toward Valentina.
The child held both of their hands.
