Chapter 7 - Beneath the Hotel

The archive doors slammed shut.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Smoke thickened rapidly.

“They sealed us in,” a guard said.

Diego covered Marisol’s mouth with a handkerchief.

“There must be another exit.”

They searched the walls.

The timer continued.

Twenty-seven minutes.

One guard found a ventilation map inside a maintenance cabinet.

“There is a service tunnel beneath the archive.”

“How do we reach it?”

“Through the floor.”

The marble tiles were too heavy to lift by hand.

Diego located an old emergency axe.

He struck the floor repeatedly until a tile cracked.

The guards helped remove it.

Below was a narrow metal ladder descending into darkness.

Marisol looked at the smoke.

“Go.”

Diego shook his head.

“You first.”

“You have the evidence.”

“And you are Valentina’s mother.”

Their eyes met.

The old tension between them vanished beneath something deeper.

Marisol climbed down.

Diego followed with the security case.

The tunnel was low, damp, and barely wide enough to crawl through.

Behind them, flames reached the archive.

Documents burned.

Metal shelves collapsed.

They moved as fast as possible.

After several minutes, the tunnel divided.

One path led toward the gardens.

The other led beneath the old ballroom.

Marisol heard a faint sound.

A child crying.

“That way.”

The guards warned that it might be a trap.

Marisol did not care.

She crawled toward the ballroom.

The tunnel ended behind a wall.

Diego kicked through weakened plaster.

They entered a hidden room filled with surveillance equipment.

On the screens, they saw different parts of the hotel.

One image showed Paulina leading Valentina through an underground parking area.

“They’re still here,” Diego said.

Another screen displayed Rafael speaking with Octavio Robles.

Octavio was a heavyset man in his sixties, silver-haired and calm.

“We should kill all three,” Rafael said.

Octavio shook his head.

“Diego is more valuable alive. We need his signatures.”

“And the maid?”

“Disposable.”

“And the child?”

Octavio looked at a watch.

“Once the trust documents are altered, she becomes irrelevant.”

Marisol’s face drained of color.

Diego recorded the conversation on his phone.

A guard pointed toward the parking entrance.

“There is only one road out.”

Diego contacted the remaining security team.

“Block the road. No one leaves.”

The group moved through the basement.

They reached the parking area as Paulina pushed Valentina toward a black car.

Valentina saw Marisol.

“Mamá!”

She pulled away.

Paulina grabbed her arm.

Marisol ran forward.

A gunshot struck the concrete near her feet.

Octavio emerged from behind a pillar.

“Stop.”

Diego stepped in front of Marisol.

“Release my daughter.”

Octavio smiled.

“Your daughter has caused extraordinary inconvenience.”

“She is three years old.”

“She is a legal obstacle.”

Rafael appeared near the vehicle.

“You should have listened to your father.”

“My father discovered you were stealing from him.”

“He became sentimental.”

“You poisoned him.”

Rafael’s smile was thin.

“I protected the partnership.”

Diego held up the security case.

“This contains the autopsy report and contracts.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

Paulina pulled Valentina closer.

The child began crying.

Marisol moved slowly toward them.

“Paulina, look at her.”

“I am looking.”

“No. You are looking at an inheritance. Look at the child.”

Paulina glanced down.

Valentina’s face was wet with tears.

For one second, uncertainty crossed Paulina’s expression.

Octavio noticed.

“Do not become weak.”

“She is frightened,” Paulina said.

“She is useful.”

Paulina looked at her father.

“You said no one would be hurt.”

Octavio laughed.

“And you believed me?”

Something inside Paulina shifted.

Her entire life, she had followed his instructions. Marry Diego. Gain access to the trust. Preserve the Robles family.

But now she understood she had never been a daughter to Octavio.

She was also an asset.

Paulina loosened her grip.

Valentina ran toward Marisol.

Rafael raised his weapon.

Diego lunged.

The gun fired.

A guard tackled Rafael as the bullet struck a column.

Marisol grabbed Valentina and shielded her.

Octavio tried to escape in the black car, but security vehicles blocked the exit.

Paulina stood frozen in the middle of the chaos.

Police sirens approached.

Diego had activated an emergency signal before entering the hotel.

Rafael was forced to the ground.

Octavio was dragged from the vehicle.

As officers placed handcuffs around his wrists, he looked at Paulina.

“You destroyed us.”

Paulina’s face was empty.

“No,” she said. “You did.”

Valentina clung to Marisol.

Diego approached slowly.

“Are you hurt?”

The child reached toward him.

“Papá.”

Everyone went silent.

It was the first time she had called him that.

Diego closed his eyes and held both Valentina and Marisol in his arms.

Behind them, flames consumed the old hotel.

But the security case remained intact.

And inside it was enough evidence to destroy two empires.
