Chapter 3 – The Trial
The investigation lasted almost a year.
Detectives uncovered forged documents.
False death certificates.
Bank transfers.
Witness intimidation.
Vanessa had convinced charities, schools, and even family friends that Emma was an unrelated orphan.
Meanwhile, trust distributions intended for Sarah had quietly disappeared into shell companies she controlled.
The courtroom remained silent as the prosecutor played Sarah's restored video.
Jurors wiped away tears.
Then Emma testified.
She stood on a small wooden platform so she could reach the microphone.
She wasn't asked complicated legal questions.
Only one.
"Why didn't you tell Mr. Whitmore the truth sooner?"
Emma looked toward Arthur.
"Mrs. Vanessa said Grandpa would hate me because my mom disappointed him."
Arthur couldn't hold back his tears.
"I never stopped loving your mother."
The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
Vanessa was found guilty of multiple counts of fraud, coercion, unlawful guardianship, evidence tampering, and financial crimes. Additional investigations into Sarah's death remained open.
As deputies led her away, she glanced back one final time.
Emma didn't look at her.
