The Breaking Point At Home / Chapter 1 / 3

CHAPTER 2: The Secntence That Changed Everything

The room fell into complete silence.

I looked directly at my mother and Jessica before speaking.

"Pack your bags. You have one hour to leave my house."

My mother's smile disappeared.

"What?" she whispered, convinced she had misheard me.

"You heard me."

Jessica shot to her feet.

"Are you serious? We came all this way to help!"

I glanced toward Emily, who was still trembling beside me.

"Help?"

I pointed toward the kitchen.

"My wife has been carrying a sick child, cooking dinner, unpacking groceries, and taking care of this house by herself while the two of you sat on the couch."

Neither of them answered.

"I stood in that hallway for thirty seconds watching. I wanted to believe I was wrong."

I shook my head.

"I wasn't."

My mother crossed her arms.

"Emily never asked us."

Emily looked up through swollen eyes.

"I asked every day."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I asked if someone could watch Leo while I made dinner."

"I asked if someone could let the dog outside."

"I asked if someone could help unload the groceries."

"I stopped asking because every time I did, you told me you were tired."

Jessica rolled her eyes.

"Oh my God, she's making us sound like villains."

I stepped closer.

"No."

"I watched you make yourselves look like villains."

The words landed harder than I expected.

For years, I had protected my family from every uncomfortable truth.

Tonight, I refused.

My mother tried one last defense.

"We're guests."

I nodded slowly.

"And Emily is my wife."

"This is her home."

"You treated her like your servant."

She opened her mouth again, but I held up my hand.

"Conversation over."

"You have one hour."

May you like

For the first time in my life...

My mother realized I wasn't going to change my mind.
