CHAPTER 3: The Truth No One Wanted to Hear

The front door slammed behind them just before eight o'clock.
The silence afterward felt almost unreal.
Emily leaned against the kitchen counter.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I stared at her.
"For what?"
"For causing problems between you and your family."
I couldn't believe she thought this was her fault.
I took both of her hands.
"You didn't cause this."
"I ignored it."
The memories hit me all at once.
Every holiday where Mom expected Emily to cook.
Every birthday where Jessica left her dishes on the table because "Emily doesn't mind."
Every sarcastic comment disguised as a joke.
Every excuse I had made.
"They don't mean it."
"They're just old-fashioned."
"They'll change."
They never had.
Because I never made them.
That night, after Leo finally fell asleep with medicine and cool towels, Emily confessed something that broke my heart.
"I started counting the days until you came home."
She smiled weakly.
"Not because I missed you..."
She paused.
"...because I knew I'd finally have someone on my side."
I couldn't speak.
No husband ever wants to realize that his wife has been surviving instead of living.
The next morning my phone exploded with messages.
My aunt said I had embarrassed my mother.
My cousin called me disrespectful.
Jessica posted on social media about "ungrateful people."
Then my uncle sent one message that changed everything.
"I was there last Christmas."
"I saw how they treated Emily."
"You finally did what the rest of us were too afraid to do."
One by one...
Relatives began calling.
Not to defend my mother.
May you like
To apologize for staying silent.
The illusion of the perfect family had finally cracked.
