Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden for Twenty-Eight Years

The church courtyard fell silent.
Every guest stared at the woman standing on the stone steps.
The groom's phone slipped slightly in his trembling hand.
His adoptive father, Richard Bennett, suddenly pushed through the crowd.
"What is the meaning of this?" he demanded.
The woman lowered her eyes.
"You know exactly why I'm here."
Richard's face hardened.
"Security."
Two guards stepped forward.
Before they could touch her, the bride raised her voice.
"Nobody touches her."
The guards froze.
She looked directly at Richard.
"She deserves to speak."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"She's mentally unstable."
The woman slowly reached into her worn canvas bag.
"I knew you'd say that."
She removed an old hospital bracelet.
A faded newspaper clipping.
And a thick envelope sealed for nearly three decades.
"I was nineteen when I gave birth."
"My husband had died two months earlier."
"I had nothing."
"Richard came to the hospital."
The guests listened without breathing.
"He promised my son would have a better life."
"He promised I could visit once I found work."
Her voice cracked.
"But after I signed temporary guardianship papers..."
"He disappeared."
She handed the envelope to the groom.
"I searched for you every year."
"I never stopped."
The groom opened the envelope.
Inside were dozens of returned birthday cards.
Letters.
School drawings she had imagined sending.
Every envelope carried the same stamp:
RETURN TO SENDER.
He slowly looked up.
"You wrote to me..."
She nodded through tears.
"Every birthday."
"Every Christmas."
"Every Mother's Day."
Richard suddenly shouted.
"She abandoned you!"
"No."
The woman whispered.
"I was robbed of you."
Silence spread across the church.
For the first time in his life...

The groom no longer knew which man had raised him.
Or which one had lied.
