Chapter 3: A Wedding Stopped by the Truth

The bride quietly took the groom's hand.

"There's only one way to know."

She turned toward the officiant.

"Please postpone the ceremony."

Nobody objected.

Hours later...

The family sat inside a law office.

The attorney opened a locked file Richard had tried to keep sealed.

Inside was the original guardianship agreement.

It clearly stated:

Temporary custody.

Maximum period:

Six months.

There was no adoption order.

No court approval.

No document terminating the mother's rights.

Richard slowly lowered his head.

"I couldn't let her take you."

"You were everything I had."

The groom stared at the man who had taught him to ride a bicycle.

Who had attended every school play.

Who had comforted him after every nightmare.

"You loved me..."

Richard nodded.

"But you stole me."

The words shattered the room.

Richard quietly confessed.

He had bribed a hospital administrator to hide the mother's records.

He moved to another city.

Changed phone numbers.

Intercepted every letter.

He convinced the little boy that his mother had abandoned him.

Not because he hated her.

Because he feared losing the son he had come to love.

Police officers entered moments later.

Richard offered no resistance.

As they placed handcuffs on him, he looked once more at the groom.

"I'm sorry."

The groom couldn't answer.

Some wounds were too deep for immediate forgiveness.
