Chapter 2: The Wedding That Became an Investigation

No one moved.

The chapel was so silent that the soft crackle of candle flames seemed impossibly loud.

Nathan stood at the altar, staring at the crescent-shaped birthmark exposed on his chest.

Emily looked from him to her mother, unable to understand what she was seeing.

"Mom..."

Her voice barely existed.

"What are you talking about?"

Margaret couldn't answer immediately.

She reached into her purse with trembling hands and removed an old photograph, its edges faded from years of being unfolded and folded again.

It showed a smiling young woman cradling a newborn wrapped in a blue hospital blanket.

On the baby's tiny chest, just above his heart, was the same crescent-shaped birthmark.

Nathan's breathing became uneven.

"I was adopted," he said quietly.

Every face in the chapel turned toward him.

"My parents told me they brought me home when I was a few weeks old."

Charles Whitman slowly opened the worn brown folder he had carried for years.

"The adoption records were always incomplete," he said.

"There were missing signatures, conflicting dates, and one unexplained amendment."

He carefully compared the documents with Nathan's identification.

Then he looked at Margaret.

"I believe we need a DNA test immediately."

Emily stepped backward, tears streaming down her face.

"So..."

She whispered.

"There's a chance..."

Margaret nodded through her tears.

"A very real chance."

Nathan wasn't the man she was about to marry.

He might be the brother she had been searching for without ever knowing it.

The wedding guests quietly lowered their phones.

No one cared about the ceremony anymore.

An ambulance wasn't called.

The police were.

Because if Nathan truly was the missing infant from twenty years ago...

Someone had committed a crime that had remained hidden for two decades.

May you like

And somewhere...

The person responsible was still alive.
