Chapter 3: The Woman Who Stole a Child

The DNA results arrived forty-eight hours later.

Charles gathered everyone in his office before opening the sealed envelope.

Nathan watched silently.

Margaret gripped Emily's hand so tightly that neither of them noticed.

Charles read the report once.

Then again.

Finally, he looked up.

"Probability of maternity..."

His voice faltered.

"99.9999 percent."

Margaret covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.

"My son..."

Nathan couldn't speak.

Twenty years of unanswered questions suddenly had an answer.

But one mystery remained.

Who had taken him?

The investigation reopened immediately.

Detectives reviewed hospital records from 2005, interviewed retired nurses, and examined surveillance photographs that had been ignored for years.

One image stopped everyone.

A volunteer carrying a newborn through a side exit.

The badge on her uniform was fake.

Facial recognition matched a woman named Linda Mercer, a temporary hospital contractor who disappeared only days after the kidnapping.

She had died three years earlier.

But investigators discovered journals hidden inside her former home.

In them, she confessed everything.

She had recently lost a baby of her own and convinced herself that taking another child would somehow heal her grief.

Unable to raise the infant, she later arranged a private adoption through an illegal intermediary.

Nathan's adoptive parents had never known.

They believed every document they signed was legitimate.

When detectives questioned them, both were devastated.

"We loved him from the first moment we held him," his adoptive father said.

"If we had known..."

His voice broke.

"We would have spent our lives trying to return him."

Nathan believed them.

Because love had never been the crime.

The lie had.
