No one spoke.
The industrial kitchen, usually filled with the sound of sizzling pans and shouted orders, became so quiet that the hum of the refrigerators seemed deafening.
Mateo slowly lowered his hand.
He continued looking into Isabella's tear-filled eyes.
"What did you just say?"
She tried to wipe away her tears with the sleeve of her chef's jacket.
"I shouldn't have said anything."
"You've said enough."
His voice remained calm.
"Answer me."
Isabella closed her eyes.
"Emma..."
She struggled to breathe.
"Emma is your daughter."
Across the room, Valeria let out a nervous laugh.
"This is ridiculous."
"She's lying because she knows she's about to lose her job."
No one agreed.
No one even looked at her.
Mateo stared at Isabella.
"If that's true..."
His voice broke for the first time.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
She looked toward the kitchen floor.
"Because your father paid me to disappear."
The words landed harder than the slap that had started everything.
"He said your career would be destroyed if the media discovered you had become a father while your company was preparing to go public."
Mateo felt the room tilt beneath him.
"He promised Emma would always be protected."
"He promised you would never know."
Isabella slowly removed a worn silver necklace from beneath her chef's jacket.
Inside the small locket was a faded photograph.
A younger Mateo stood beside her, smiling outside a culinary school café twelve years earlier.
"I kept this because it was the only proof our family had ever existed."
Mateo's hands trembled as he took the locket.
