Chapter 3: The Woman Who Lied to Everyone

The banquet stopped before the first course was served.
Mateo walked onto the ballroom stage.
Hundreds of guests turned toward him.
"I owe someone an apology," he said.
He looked toward the kitchen entrance.
"Isabella... would you please join me?"
Still wearing her white chef's jacket, she hesitated before stepping into the glittering ballroom.
Whispers spread through the crowd.
Mateo took the microphone again.
"For years, I believed this woman had chosen to leave my life."
He paused.
"I was wrong."
He turned toward Valeria.
"How long have you known?"
Valeria's confident smile finally disappeared.
"I..."
"Answer me."
She swallowed hard.
"My uncle worked for your father."
The ballroom grew silent.
"He told me Isabella had been paid to disappear."
"So I never corrected you."
Mateo stared at her.
"You let me believe the mother of my child abandoned us."
Valeria lowered her eyes.
"I loved you."
"No."
Mateo's voice remained steady.
"You loved the version of me that came without a family."
Then another voice echoed across the ballroom.
"It wasn't only her."
Every head turned.
Standing at the entrance was Mateo's elderly father.
His shoulders seemed smaller than they had ever been.
"I arranged everything."
The confession stunned the room.
"I thought I was protecting the company."
"I convinced myself there would always be time to explain."
He looked toward Isabella.
"There never was."
The old man removed a folder from his briefcase.
Inside were bank records.
Confidential agreements.
Signed nondisclosure contracts.
Every lie had been documented.
Nothing remained hidden.
Mateo quietly handed the folder to his attorneys.
"This isn't about revenge."
"It's about finally telling the truth."
That night, Valeria left the ballroom alone.
