Chapter 1: The Bride's Decision

The entire ballroom held its breath.
The minister lowered his Bible, unsure whether the ceremony had just ended or had somehow become something far more dangerous.
The groom, Adrian Blackwell, wiped blood from the corner of his mouth and glared at his future father-in-law.
"You've lost your mind."
Colonel Nathan Brooks didn't answer.
His attention never left his daughter.
Sophia gently touched the bruise beneath her jaw before looking into her father's eyes.
"I'm okay."
Nathan immediately understood.
She wasn't asking for help.
She was asking for trust.
Against every instinct, he stepped back.
The guests whispered in disbelief.
Why would a father allow the wedding to continue after witnessing his daughter's injuries?
Adrian laughed.
"I knew she'd come to her senses."
He straightened his tuxedo and smiled confidently at the crowd.
"You see? She knows where she belongs."
Sophia slowly walked toward him.
She reached out.
Instead of taking his hand, she carefully adjusted his tie.
The gesture looked affectionate.
Only she knew the tiny wireless microphone she clipped beneath the knot.
"Ready?" she asked quietly.
Adrian smirked.
"I already won."
Sophia smiled.
"No."
"You've just started talking."
No one noticed Detective Lauren Hayes sitting among the wedding guests wearing a navy evening gown.
The microphone was transmitting every word directly to the surveillance van parked outside the cathedral.

The wedding wasn't merely a ceremony.
It was the final phase of an investigation that had lasted eleven months.
