CHAPTER 2 — THE PROMISE HE NEVER KEPT

The bridal suite became so quiet that everyone could hear the ticking of the antique clock on the wall.
Richard Whitaker stared at the bracelet on Evelyn's wrist.
"I never wanted this to happen," he whispered.
Marianne laughed bitterly.
"You gave another woman the bracelet you claimed to have lost."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"I didn't give it to her as a lover."
"Then explain."
He reached into his coat pocket and removed a faded envelope, its edges worn from years of being carried.
"This should have been opened twenty years ago."
He handed it to Ethan.
The letter was addressed to Richard Whitaker in the handwriting of Lily's late father, Daniel Moore.
Ethan unfolded it and began to read aloud.
"If I don't survive the surgery, promise me one thing. Don't let Evelyn or Lily know that I borrowed money from you. Let my daughter grow up believing her father protected his family with dignity. If you ever need to sell something to keep that promise, do it. Never tell them unless the truth becomes the only way to save them."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"You paid Daniel's debts?"
Richard nodded.
"He borrowed money for experimental treatment."
"He planned to repay every dollar."
"But he died before he could."
Marianne stared silently.
Richard continued.
"Years later, when Evelyn's mother needed emergency surgery, I had nothing left except your anniversary bracelet."
"I sold my watch."
I pawned the bracelet.
"When I finally recovered it..."
"I gave it to Evelyn because it had become the symbol of a promise I had failed to explain."
May you like
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"I kept it only because it reminded me that someone honored Daniel's last wish."
