CHAPTER 2 — The Drawing That Changed Everything

The room fell silent.

Not the comfortable silence of a wealthy home.

The suffocating kind.

Even the house staff standing near the doorway stopped breathing.

Elena blinked, caught completely off guard by her husband's outburst.

"Our daughter?" she repeated with a bitter laugh. "Since when did you start calling her that?"

Richard Carter—one of the most respected businessmen in the country—didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he knelt beside Chloe.

Her tiny hands were stained with coffee grounds and bits of trash from the garbage can.

Without caring that his thousand-dollar suit was getting dirty, Richard carefully wiped her fingers clean with his own handkerchief.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Chloe looked at him with swollen eyes.

"Daddy... did you like my picture?"

Richard's throat tightened.

"I love it."

She sniffled.

"I wanted all three of us to be happy again."

Richard looked down at the drawing.

Three smiling stick figures.

One tall.

One with long yellow hair.

One tiny girl standing safely between them.

In the corner Chloe had written in crooked letters:

My Family Forever.

His heart shattered.

He suddenly remembered every moment he'd ignored.

The birthdays he missed.

The school plays Elena claimed Chloe never wanted him to attend.

The bedtime stories that somehow always happened while he was "too busy."

Every memory had one thing in common.

Elena had always been there...

Speaking for Chloe.

Explaining Chloe.

Controlling Chloe.

Richard slowly stood.

"Mary."

The elderly housekeeper immediately stepped forward.

"Yes, sir."

"Take Chloe upstairs. Run her a warm bath. Then order every toy, every art supply, and every book she wants."

Chloe tugged on his sleeve.

"Daddy..."

He bent down again.

"I'll be there in a little while."

"You promise?"

"I swear on my life."

She wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.

For the first time in years...

Richard hugged his daughter back.

Only after Chloe disappeared upstairs did he turn toward Elena.

His expression had become frighteningly calm.

"Sit down."

She crossed her arms.

"I don't take orders."

"You do today."

Something in his voice made even Elena hesitate.

She slowly sat.

Richard pressed a button beneath his desk.

"Security."

Within seconds two uniformed guards entered.

Elena frowned.

"What is this?"

Richard looked directly at the head of security.

"Close every gate."

"No one leaves this estate until I know exactly what's been happening to my daughter."

Elena laughed nervously.

"You've lost your mind."

Richard answered quietly.

May you like

"No."

"I finally found it."
