Chapter 13 - THREE KEYS, ONE TRUTH

Police sealed the chapel before the vault was opened.
Detective Ramirez recorded everything.
Lorenzo inserted the first key.
Sophia inserted the second.
Isabella’s inherited key completed the triangle.
They turned them simultaneously.
Something moved behind the stone wall.
A section of masonry slowly opened.
Inside was a small climate-controlled chamber.
There were no stacks of gold.
No jewels.
No fortune.
Only documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
And one old digital recorder.
Lorenzo picked it up.
A label had been taped across the back.
GABRIEL.
He pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then his father’s voice.
“You killed Elena.”
Another man laughed.
Gabriel.
“She should have minded her business.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
Elena had discovered illegal shipping manifests.
She threatened to go to federal authorities.
Gabriel sabotaged her vehicle before the trip.
He expected investigators to accept the accident.
They did.
Then the conversation shifted.
Gabriel described politicians he paid.
Officials he controlled.
Companies he used.
Account numbers.
Shipping routes.
Everything.
Sophia felt sick.
Lorenzo’s father had secretly recorded a full confession.
“Why didn’t he give this to police?”
Detective Ramirez asked.
Lorenzo examined the documents.
Then he found the answer.
His father had been gathering more evidence.
He wanted to dismantle the entire network at once.
But he died before he could finish.
Sophia picked up another folder.
Her name was written on the tab.
She froze.
“Lorenzo.”
He came closer.
Inside were photographs taken during the last six months.
Sophia walking Lily to school.
Sophia shopping for groceries.
Lily playing near the greenhouse.
Someone had been watching them long before Sophia overheard the library conversation.
Then Sophia saw a photograph that made her knees weak.
Lily stood beside a man at the edge of the garden.
Gabriel.
The photograph was dated three months earlier.
Sophia turned to her daughter.
“Have you seen this man?”
Lily looked at the picture.
“Yes.”
Everyone went silent.
“When?”
“He gave me candy.”
Sophia’s stomach turned.
“What did he say?”
Lily thought for a moment.
“He said he knew Daddy.”
Sophia blinked.
Lily’s father had been dead for four years.
“What else did he say?”
May you like
Lily looked confused.
“He said Daddy used to work for him.”
