Chapter 16 - GABRIEL MORETTI

Gabriel looked older than the photographs.
His hair was gray.
A scar crossed the left side of his jaw.
But his eyes were cold and alert.
Lorenzo moved in front of the girls.
“It’s over.”
Gabriel laughed.
“People have been saying that to me for thirty years.”
Sophia stared at him.
“You killed Ethan.”
Gabriel glanced toward her.
“Your husband was stubborn.”
Sophia’s hands curled into fists.
“He was going to expose you.”
“He was going to ruin a very profitable operation.”
“You murdered him.”
Gabriel shrugged.
“Accidents happen on wet roads.”
Sophia moved forward.
Lorenzo stopped her.
Gabriel smiled.
“That anger will get you killed.”
Sophia stared at him.
“No.”
“It kept me alive.”
Gabriel raised the gun slightly.
Lorenzo’s voice changed.
“You killed Elena too.”
For the first time, Gabriel looked directly at his nephew.
“Elena was another person who believed morality mattered more than family.”
“You’re not my family.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You inherited my father’s money.”
“I inherited his ambition.”
Lorenzo shook his head.
“You inherited nothing.”
Gabriel held up the recorder.
“This says otherwise.”
He planned to destroy the confession.
What he did not know was that Detective Ramirez had already copied every file.
Lorenzo realized that.
He began to smile.
Gabriel noticed.
“What?”
“You’re late.”
Gabriel’s expression tightened.
“The evidence is already with federal investigators.”
Silence.
Gabriel looked at the recorder.
Then toward the vault.
His confidence faded.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“The accounts are frozen.”
“The ports are locked.”
“Malcolm talked.”
Gabriel’s face changed at the name.
“Victor has been identified.”
“And Valentina will turn on you the moment she realizes she has no future.”
A voice came from behind Gabriel.
“He’s right.”
Everyone turned.
Valentina stood at the entrance.
She held a pistol.
Gabriel stared at her.
“You were told to secure the house.”
Valentina smiled bitterly.
“I was told many things.”
Gabriel raised his weapon toward her.
Valentina fired first.
The bullet struck Gabriel’s shoulder.
He dropped the recorder.
Lorenzo rushed toward him.
Sophia pulled both girls behind the steel table.

Gunfire echoed through the underground room.
Then the lights went out.
