Chapter 11 - Box Seventeen

Zurich was gray with rain when Victor entered Union Helvetia Bank.

Marco remained outside with the security team.

Lily stayed with Ethan at a secured residence.

Victor carried only the key.

No phone.

No weapon.

The bank manager escorted him beneath the building.

Box seventeen was not a standard safe-deposit box.

It was a private legacy vault.

The manager looked at the key.

“This account has not been accessed since 2011.”

“By whom?”

“Alexander Blackwood.”

Victor’s father had supposedly died in 2011.

Three days before his death, according to the record.

The vault opened.

Inside sat one leather folder.

One cassette tape.

One envelope addressed to Victor.

And one sealed laboratory report.

Victor opened the letter first.

Victor,

If you are reading this, then I failed to repair what I created.

Victor sat down.

He continued.

Evelyn was innocent of the theft.

I framed her.

Victor closed his eyes.

His father admitted everything.

Alexander had used Evelyn to hide illegal corporate transfers.

When she threatened to expose him, he destroyed her reputation.

He also admitted the affair.

Serena was his daughter.

Alexander had supported Evelyn secretly.

But when Evelyn demanded public recognition, Alexander refused.

She disappeared with Serena and Damien.

The family had been told she died.

Alexander knew she was alive.

Then came the part Victor had not expected.

Evelyn contacted Alexander years later.

She wanted revenge.

She threatened to expose the entire Blackwood financial structure.

Alexander responded by creating the Continuity Trust.

Not for Evelyn.

Against her.

The original foundation structure was a trap.

If Evelyn attempted to activate it through fraudulent deaths or forged transfers, control would not pass to her.

Every hidden Blackwood company would automatically be liquidated.

Assets would go to employee pensions, charities, and government settlements.

The empire would disappear.

Victor stared.

That was what Evelyn wanted now.

Not control.

Destruction.

He opened the laboratory report.

Toxicology.

Alexander Blackwood.

Date: two days before death.

Digoxin detected.

Victor went cold.

His father had been poisoned too.

The death recorded as a heart attack had been chemically induced.

The same drug found in Ethan.

The same medication stolen from St. Matthew’s years later.

The pattern had started before Isabella.

Victor inserted the cassette into an old player provided by the bank.

Alexander’s voice filled the room.

“If I die suddenly, Evelyn did not act alone.”

Victor leaned forward.

“There is someone inside my family helping her.”

“I do not know who.”

“But I know what they want.”

A pause.

“They want Victor angry.”

Victor frowned.

“They want him violent.”

“They want him isolated.”

“They know my son believes strength means never trusting anyone.”

“If they can turn that weakness against him, they will destroy him without firing a bullet.”

Victor stared at the recorder.

Then came the final sentence.

“The person closest to Victor will be the one they use last.”

The tape ended.

Victor sat motionless.

Closest.

Catherine?

Marco?

Lily?

Ethan?

He hated the question.

That was exactly the point.

Make him suspicious.

Make him isolate himself.

Make him destroy his own loyalties.

Outside the bank, Marco received a call.

Damien.

“We have a problem.”

Marco looked around.

“What?”

“My mother has Lily.”

Marco’s face changed.

“What did you say?”

“She found the safe house.”

Marco ran toward the bank.

Victor exited seconds later.

“What happened?”

Marco held up the phone.

Damien spoke through the speaker.

“Evelyn took Lily and Ethan.”

Victor stopped moving.

Everything around him disappeared.

“When?”

“Seven minutes ago.”

“How?”

“Your security opened the door.”

Victor looked at Marco.

Marco went pale.

Only Blackwood security had the access code.

Alexander’s warning returned.

The person closest to Victor.

Victor’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Which guard?”

Marco checked.

Then froze.

“Daniel Velez.”

Victor looked at him.

Marco’s younger brother.

Marco stared at the phone.

“No.”

Victor said nothing.

Marco began shaking his head.

“Daniel would never.”

Victor looked at him.

“Call him.”

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Marco’s face collapsed.

Victor placed a hand on his shoulder.

“We find them first.”

They tracked the safe-house vehicles.

One SUV had left five minutes after Victor entered the bank.

Security cameras showed Lily in the back seat.

Ethan in her arms.

Daniel driving.

Another vehicle followed.

A woman sat behind the windshield.

Black veil.

Evelyn.

Victor’s phone rang.

Lily.

He answered.

Evelyn spoke.

“Did you enjoy your father’s confession?”

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“Put Lily on.”

“Not yet.”

“Evelyn.”

“Did Alexander tell you he framed me?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you he left me with nothing?”

“Yes.”

“Then you understand.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You should.”

“My father hurt you.”

“You poisoned him.”

Silence.

Victor continued.

“You killed Isabella.”

“No.”

“You helped.”

Another silence.

“Isabella was supposed to survive.”

Victor laughed without humor.

“So was Ethan?”

Evelyn did not answer.

Victor’s grip tightened.

“Where is my son?”

“Safe.”

“If he has one mark—”

“Your threats bore me.”

“Then hear a promise.”

Victor’s voice became quiet.

“If Ethan is hurt, there will be nowhere left in this world where your name is safe.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Still Alexander’s son.”

Victor forced himself to stop.

His father’s warning.

They want Victor angry.

They want him violent.

They want him isolated.

Victor breathed once.

Then he changed.

“What do you want?”

Evelyn paused.

“The documents in box seventeen.”

“You know what they do?”

“Yes.”

“So you know they destroy the empire.”

“Yes.”

“You spent thirty years trying to inherit it.”

“I spent thirty years believing revenge would heal me.”

“And?”

“It didn’t.”

Victor stared into the rain.

“So now you burn everything.”

“Yes.”

“Even Serena?”

Evelyn’s voice faltered.

Victor noticed.

“Where is she?”

“Damien has her.”

“He wants to trade.”

“He always was sentimental.”

“He learned that from Adrian.”

Victor looked at Marco.

“Give Lily the phone.”

Evelyn was silent.

Then another voice.

“Victor?”

Lily.

Alive.

His eyes closed for half a second.

“Is Ethan with you?”

“Yes.”

“Is he hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you?”

“I’m okay.”

Then Lily spoke faster.

“Victor, don’t give her—”

The phone moved.

Evelyn returned.

“Enough.”

Victor’s voice remained calm.

“You made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“You let me hear her.”

Evelyn laughed.

“That changes nothing.”

“It changes everything.”

Victor ended the call.

Marco stared at him.

“What did you hear?”

Victor replayed Lily’s voice in his memory.

Not words.

Background.

Three quick metallic knocks.

Then a long horn.

Then bells.

Victor looked at Marco.

“Railway crossing.”

Marco nodded.

“Church bells.”

“In Switzerland?”

Victor shook his head.

“They moved east.”

“The horn was European freight rail.”

“Find crossings near old churches within thirty minutes of the safe house.”

Marco began searching.

Then Victor added.

“And water.”

“How do you know?”

“I heard gulls.”

They narrowed locations.

One industrial dock fit everything.

Freight line.

Church.

Lake.

Victor looked at the map.

“They’re at Lake Constance.”

Marco called teams.

Then his phone buzzed.

Message from Daniel.

Marco stared.

One line.

I’M SORRY.

Coordinates followed.

Same dock.

Marco’s face changed.

“He’s helping us.”

Victor shook his head.

“Or leading us.”

Marco looked at him.

Victor remembered the tape.

The person closest to Victor will be the one they use last.

He made a decision.

“No large team.”

Marco frowned.

“Victor—”

“Evelyn expects force.”

“We give her something else.”

“What?”

Victor looked at the liquidation documents.

“The truth.”

They reached the dock after sunset.

Victor walked alone toward the warehouse.

He carried the leather folder.

Inside, Lily sat tied to a chair.

Ethan slept against her chest.

Evelyn stood behind them.

Daniel Velez stood near the door.

Gun in hand.

Marco remained hidden outside.

Victor looked at Daniel.

“You betrayed your brother.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Evelyn laughed.

“Families are so easy to break.”

Victor looked at her.

“No.”

“They’re easy to lie to.”

Evelyn’s expression changed slightly.

Victor held up the folder.

“You want this?”

“Yes.”

“Then let them go.”

“No.”

“You don’t trust me.”

“I learned that from your father.”

Victor nodded.

“Then you should know what these papers say.”

“I know.”

“No.”

“You know what Thomas told you.”

Evelyn stared.

Victor continued.

“The Continuity Trust does not give you Blackwood Maritime.”

“It liquidates it.”

Her eyes changed.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

Victor opened the document.

“Every company.”

“Every holding.”

“Every property.”

“If you trigger the clause through the deaths of Ethan and me, the empire disappears.”

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“That’s a lie.”

“Alexander wrote it for you.”

“No.”

Victor stepped closer.

“He knew you were coming.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“He knew you would use his own greed against his family.”

“Shut up.”

“He beat you twenty years ago.”

Evelyn raised her gun.

Victor did not move.

“He has been dead fifteen years and you are still doing exactly what he planned.”

“Shut up.”

Lily watched Evelyn’s hand begin trembling.

Victor continued.

“He framed you.”

“He abandoned Serena.”

“He hid Adrian.”

“He destroyed your life.”

“And now you are allowing him to choose what you become.”

Evelyn screamed.

“SHUT UP.”

Ethan woke crying.

Lily held him tightly.

Victor’s eyes moved toward his son.

Evelyn noticed.

A strange calm returned to her face.

“Then maybe the empire doesn’t matter.”

She pointed the gun toward Ethan.

Victor stopped breathing.

Evelyn smiled.

“Maybe only blood does.”

Before she could fire, Daniel moved.

He struck her arm upward.

The gun exploded.

The bullet hit the ceiling.

Marco’s team rushed inside.

Lily threw herself over Ethan.

Victor tackled Evelyn.

The weapon slid away.

Daniel fell.

Blood spread across his side.

Marco ran to his brother.

“Daniel.”

Victor restrained Evelyn.

For a moment he wanted to do exactly what she expected.

He wanted to end it with his hands.

Then Alexander’s recording returned.

They want Victor angry.

Victor released her.

“Take her.”

Security handcuffed Evelyn.

She stared at him.

“You’re weak.”

Victor looked toward Lily holding Ethan.

“No.”

“I’m finally choosing who gets to survive me.”

Then Daniel coughed.

Marco pressed against the wound.

Daniel grabbed his brother.

“I had to.”

Marco’s eyes filled with rage and fear.

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

“She had my daughter.”

Marco froze.

Victor stared.

Daniel whispered.

“She still does.”

Everyone became silent.

Evelyn smiled from the floor.

Victor turned slowly.

“You kidnapped a child.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Not me.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked toward the warehouse door.

A car engine started outside.

Victor ran.

Headlights disappeared toward the highway.

Marco checked his phone.

A photograph appeared.

His six-year-old daughter, Sofia, sat in the back seat of a moving car.

Beside her was Serena Montigue.

Serena looked directly into the camera.

Alive.

Free.

May you like

And smiling.
