Chapter 16 - The Woman Isabella Trusted

The second original will was genuine.

Three independent examiners confirmed it.

Isabella had hidden it inside Ethan’s stuffed elephant.

The toy had been sealed with her personal effects after her death.

Nobody opened it because Victor could not bring himself to sort through the box.

Lily had found the small tear accidentally.

Inside was the will.

A letter.

And another envelope.

The letter was addressed to Victor.

The envelope was addressed to Lily Harper.

Lily stared at her own name.

Written by a woman she had never met.

Victor stood beside her.

“Open it.”

Her hands trembled.

She unfolded the paper.

Ms. Harper,

You do not know me.

But I know what happened to you at St. Matthew’s.

Lily stopped.

Victor watched her.

She continued.

I believe you.

Lily pressed one hand over her mouth.

Isabella described hearing about the medication scandal through a patient-safety committee.

She had reviewed Lily’s reports anonymously.

She believed Lily had discovered a network of diverted medication linked to Dr. Ames.

Isabella had planned to offer Lily a position after Ethan’s birth.

Then she became frightened.

If you are reading this, something prevented me from contacting you myself.

Lily’s eyes filled.

The letter continued.

If my son ever reaches your care, please understand that I did not choose you because I expected you to save him.

I chose you because when telling the truth cost you everything, you still told it.

Victor looked away.

Lily cried quietly.

There was one final paragraph.

Do not let Victor frighten you.

He confuses silence with loyalty.

Remind him that people who love him must be allowed to disagree with him.

Victor stared at the page.

Lily laughed through tears.

“She really knew you.”

Victor almost smiled.

“Yes.”

The will was filed immediately.

The disputed properties left Blackwood control.

Helena’s family received legal shares.

Margaret’s share was placed under court supervision.

Serena and Damien became eligible for limited inheritance through their relationship to Alexander and Adrian.

The central motive for the original conspiracy collapsed.

But the crimes remained.

Helena survived the gunshot.

Margaret surrendered.

Damien’s body was not found in the water.

That worried Victor most.

Three days passed.

Then five.

Serena remained under guard and gave a full statement.

She admitted hurting Ethan.

She admitted giving him clonazepam twice.

She admitted helping forge documents.

She did not ask for immunity.

Lily found that surprising.

Victor did not.

“She knows there is no version where she walks away clean.”

“Do you hate her?”

Victor looked at Lily.

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Then he added.

“And I understand her.”

Lily nodded.

“Those aren’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Ethan improved every day.

His wrist healed.

His appetite returned.

The frightening lethargy disappeared.

One morning he walked three unsteady steps across the nursery.

Lily gasped.

Victor caught him before he fell.

Ethan laughed.

For one minute the entire nightmare disappeared.

Then Marco entered.

“We found Damien.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Security camera in Manhattan.”

Victor frowned.

“Why come back?”

Marco showed him the footage.

Damien entered St. Matthew’s Hospital.

Lily went cold.

“My old hospital.”

Victor nodded.

“What does he want there?”

Lily knew.

“The pharmacy archive.”

“If he destroys the old records, we lose proof that Rachel and Ames framed me.”

Victor stood.

“Then he is not destroying evidence for himself.”

“He is protecting someone else.”

Lily’s face changed.

“Rachel?”

“Maybe.”

They reached the hospital.

The archival room had been forced open.

Several boxes were gone.

But Damien had made a mistake.

He had not realized the hospital digitized older security logs two months earlier.

Lily searched her own case.

A name appeared repeatedly.

Authorized override: DR. M. VOSS.

Lily froze.

“Voss.”

Victor looked at her.

“Margaret?”

“No.”

“Doctor.”

She searched.

Dr. Michael Voss.

Isabella’s maternal uncle.

Margaret’s younger brother.

A pediatric pharmacologist.

He had served on St. Matthew’s board.

Victor stared.

Another Voss.

Another relative.

Another invisible hand.

Dr. Michael Voss had approved Dr. Ames’s investigation into Lily.

He had signed the final recommendation terminating her.

He had also consulted on Ethan’s birth.

Victor’s face hardened.

“Where is he?”

Marco searched.

“Retired.”

“Where?”

“Connecticut.”

Victor looked at Lily.

She remembered him.

An older doctor who barely spoke during her disciplinary hearing.

He had watched her lose everything.

And had said nothing.

They drove to Connecticut.

Michael Voss’s house was empty.

The study contained medical records.

Ethan.

Isabella.

Alexander.

Adrian.

Serena.

Damien.

Lily.

Every major person in the conspiracy had a file.

Victor opened Isabella’s.

Inside were blood tests from weeks before her death.

Digoxin.

Low levels.

She had already been poisoned before the car crash.

Victor stared.

Thomas had ordered the brake sabotage.

But someone else had been dosing Isabella first.

Michael Voss.

Lily opened her own file.

A note was clipped inside.

SUBJECT SUITABLE FOR FUTURE PLACEMENT.

She felt sick.

Victor read it.

“Subject?”

“They treated you like an asset.”

Lily turned pages.

Psychological profile.

Financial vulnerability.

Employment history.

Family contacts.

Every weakness catalogued.

Then one line.

High moral rigidity.

Likely to report abuse even under personal risk.

Victor looked at her.

“They chose you because you would report Serena.”

Lily frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

Victor understood.

“Yes, it does.”

“If Serena abused Ethan and Lily exposed her…”

“Serena becomes disposable.”

Lily whispered.

“Mother gets blamed.”

“Thomas gets blamed.”

“The conspiracy collapses around people who think they are controlling it.”

Victor looked around Michael’s study.

“While someone else survives.”

Lily felt cold.

“Michael.”

Victor nodded.

Michael Voss had positioned himself outside every visible conflict.

No inheritance claim.

No direct role.

No public accusation.

Only medical access.

Data.

Records.

Control.

Marco found financial documents.

Michael owned hidden short positions against Blackwood companies.

If the empire collapsed, he would make hundreds of millions.

Victor stared.

“It was never only revenge.”

Lily whispered.

“He monetized it.”

They heard a door close downstairs.

Victor motioned for silence.

Footsteps.

Slow.

An elderly man appeared.

Dr. Michael Voss.

He looked at Lily.

“Miss Harper.”

She stared.

“You remember me.”

“Of course.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You poisoned Isabella.”

Michael smiled faintly.

“I stabilized a chaotic situation.”

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“You drugged my son.”

“No.”

Victor froze.

Michael continued.

“I never touched Ethan.”

“Damien did.”

“Evelyn encouraged him.”

“Serena used sedatives.”

“But I wanted the child alive.”

“Why?”

Michael looked at Lily.

“Because Lily needed something to save.”

She stared.

“What?”

Michael smiled.

“A witness needs credibility.”

“Victim.”

“Villain.”

“Hero.”

“You were designed to become the hero.”

Lily felt sick.

“You destroyed my career.”

“To make your testimony powerful later.”

Victor’s voice dropped.

“You ruined her life to build a witness.”

“Yes.”

Michael sounded almost proud.

“People believe redemption stories.”

Victor stepped toward him.

Michael raised a small remote.

“Don’t.”

Victor stopped.

Michael smiled.

“You really should stop walking into houses without checking for explosives.”

Lily’s face went pale.

Michael pressed one button.

Metal shutters slammed over every window.

Gas began hissing from vents.

Victor grabbed Lily.

Marco tried the door.

Locked.

Michael backed into the hallway wearing a small respirator.

“Victor Blackwood dies in the home of a disgraced doctor.”

“Lily Harper dies beside him.”

“The story writes itself.”

Victor looked around.

“Where is Ethan?”

Michael smiled.

“Safe.”

Victor froze.

“What does that mean?”

Michael stepped backward.

“Your son will survive.”

“And when the last adult Blackwood is gone…”

He looked at Victor.

“Guess who controls his medical guardianship trust.”

Then the door sealed between them.

Lily stared at Victor.

“Medical guardianship?”

Victor’s face went cold.

Michael Voss had not been trying to kill Ethan.

He had been trying to become the person legally controlling the surviving Blackwood heir.

The entire conspiracy had one final layer.

May you like

And the gas was filling the room.
