Chapter 11 - The Nursery Wall

Police found Samuel Voss unconscious in his garage.

He had been shot in the shoulder.

His laptop was missing.

But he survived.

Before paramedics took him away, he gave Adrian one sentence.

“Evelyn hid the original trust amendment in the nursery.”

Adrian returned to the mansion before sunrise.

Lily’s nursery had remained locked since the crash.

Evelyn had designed it herself.

Soft green walls.

White shelves.

A painted field of lilies above the crib.

Adrian stood beneath the mural.

One flower had a gold center.

The others were white.

He pressed it.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a sealed legal envelope.

Evelyn had prepared an amendment four days before the attack.

It removed Marcus as executive steward.

It appointed an independent trust company.

And it formally identified Lily Vale as Adrian’s biological heir.

Samuel had notarized it.

The document had never been filed.

If filed now, Marcus’s entire succession plan would collapse.

Adrian smiled for the first time in days.

Then the nursery door opened.

Marcus stood there.

Neither man moved.

Marcus looked at the open wall panel.

Then at the envelope.

“What did you find?”

Adrian closed the panel.

“Memories.”

Marcus entered.

“You’ve been avoiding me.”

“I’ve been busy.”

“With Grace?”

Adrian’s eyes lifted.

Marcus walked toward the empty crib.

“Strange woman.”

“Quiet.”

“Invisible.”

“The kind of person nobody notices.”

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus ran one finger along the crib rail.

“People like that hear things.”

“They see things.”

“Sometimes they mistake what they see.”

Adrian stepped between Marcus and the crib.

“You seem unusually interested in my housekeeper.”

Marcus smiled.

“I’m interested in you.”

“Fifteen years, Adrian.”

“You think I don’t know when you’re hiding something?”

Adrian leaned closer.

“Fifteen years.”

“And you still don’t know everything about me.”

Marcus’s smile faded.

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“If Evelyn had discovered something before she died, she would have told me.”

Adrian looked at him.

That was the exact sentence Evelyn had warned him about.

DON’T TRUST THE MAN WHO TELLS YOU I NEVER SUSPECTED HIM.

Adrian finally understood.

Evelyn had predicted Marcus almost word for word.

Marcus left the nursery.

Adrian waited until the footsteps disappeared.

Then he removed the envelope again.

May you like

Across the front, in Evelyn’s handwriting, were four words.

TRUST NO ONE AT HOME.
