Chapter 5 - The Empty Grave

Adrian was waiting across the road.
Marcus did not enter the cemetery himself.
He met Owen Pike beneath a line of bare trees.
Adrian watched through binoculars from an unmarked SUV.
Pike had supposedly left Chicago six months earlier.
Marcus had personally informed Adrian that Pike was working somewhere in Nevada.
Another lie.
The men spoke for twelve minutes.
Then Pike entered the cemetery alone.
He walked directly to Lily’s grave.
Adrian’s phone recorded everything.
Pike knelt beside the small white stone.
He photographed it.
Then he made a call.
Adrian could not hear the words.
But Marcus’s phone lit up inside the parked sedan fifty yards away.
That was enough.
At dawn, Adrian ordered the cemetery caretaker to open Lily’s symbolic grave.
There had never been a body inside.
Only the hospital blanket, cap, and bracelet.
The small casket rose from the earth.
Adrian watched without emotion.
Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.
He looked furious.
“What are you doing?”
“Correcting a mistake.”
“You told me this was happening tomorrow.”
“I changed my mind.”
Marcus stared at the casket.
“Why?”
Adrian stepped close enough that no one else could hear.
“Because graves should contain dead people.”
Marcus’s expression did not move.
“You buried a blanket.”
“You know that.”
“Yes.”
“I also buried a daughter.”
Marcus said nothing.
Adrian watched his face.
“You were right beside me.”
“I remember.”
“You helped carry the casket.”
“Yes.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“If Lily had somehow survived that crash, what would you do?”
Marcus stared back.
“I’d thank God.”
“Would you?”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Adrian walked away.
Later that afternoon, Thomas’s damaged phone was finally restored by an electronics expert Adrian trusted.
There was only one usable audio file.
The recording began inside a moving vehicle.
Evelyn’s voice came through first.
She sounded worried.
“Thomas, Marcus changed the route again.”
Thomas replied.
“He says Adrian approved it.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“Adrian doesn’t even know where we’re going.”
There was rustling.
Then Evelyn whispered something.
“I think Marcus knows about the trust.”
Adrian stopped the recording.
Grace stood beside him.
“What trust?”
Adrian looked toward Lily.
May you like
Then he remembered a document his father had forced him to sign twelve years earlier.
A document that changed everything.
