Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE ON THE ROOFTOP

Wind tore across the rooftop.
Bianca stood near the ledge with the ledger in one hand and a gun in the other. Below her, police lights covered the street in red and blue.
Lorenzo faced her from twenty feet away.
I reached the roof with Detective Park and stopped behind the doorway.
“You always were sentimental,” Bianca said. “That was your weakness.”
“My wife and son were not weaknesses.”
“They made you predictable.”
“You killed Sofia.”
Bianca’s face hardened. “Sofia was going to expose the trust, the judges, the hospitals, everything your grandfather built.”
“She was going to expose you.”
“I was the family.”
“No,” Lorenzo said. “You were a thief standing inside it.”
Bianca lifted the ledger over the ledge. “One step and this disappears.”
Park whispered into her radio. Officers moved toward the stairwell on the far side.
Bianca heard the door.
She fired toward it.
Lorenzo rushed her.
The ledger fell.
I ran without thinking and caught the edge of its leather cover before it slid through the railing.
Bianca turned the gun toward me.
“You,” she said. “All of this because you could not let one starving infant die quietly.”
My hands tightened around the ledger.
“No. All of this because you thought grief made me weak.”
She pulled the trigger.
The gun clicked.
Empty.
Celeste had removed the final round in the chapel before Bianca escaped.
Bianca stared at the weapon.
Lorenzo took it from her.
For one frightening second, he pointed it at her chest.
Every story told about him seemed to gather on that roof.
The feared boss.
The man who answered betrayal with graves.
Bianca smiled. “Do it. Prove I raised you correctly.”
Lorenzo looked at the empty gun.
Then he threw it aside.
“No,” he said. “You taught me fear. My son taught me what it costs.”
Detective Park placed Bianca in handcuffs.
She did not struggle until agents took the ledger from me.
Then the calm vanished.
“You have no idea what you are destroying!” she screamed.
Lorenzo watched her being led away. “I know exactly what I am ending.”
By sunrise, Dr. Hale had confessed. Judge Carmichael had agreed to cooperate. Matteo surrendered his weapon and gave a full statement about every order he followed.
Dean was charged for the assault that killed Lily and for conspiracy, stalking, and evidence tampering.
Celeste accepted a deal in exchange for testimony.
Bianca faced charges tied to Sofia’s death, Leo’s poisoning, the kidnapping, the forged trust, and the hospital network.
But one question remained.
What would Lorenzo do with the empire built around the same silence that almost killed his son?
At the hospital, Leo slept beneath a warm blanket, his breathing even.
Lorenzo stood beside the crib.
“I am shutting down everything illegal,” he said.
I looked at him. “Can you?”
“I don’t know.”
“That may be the first honest answer you’ve given anyone.”
He almost smiled.
Then Leo opened his eyes.
His tiny hand reached past his father.
Toward me.
Lorenzo watched him.
“Mara,” he said quietly, “when he leaves this hospital, I need to know he is safe.”

I knew what he was asking.
And I knew safety inside the Rossi world could never be promised by words alone.
