Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED THE TRUST

Bianca Rossi entered the nursery wearing black wool, pearls, and the expression of a grieving queen.

She was sixty-two, elegant, and feared in a quieter way than Lorenzo. Where he used force, Bianca used signatures, judges, hospital boards, and private conversations that ended careers.

Her gaze landed on Leo in my arms.

Then on my open uniform.

Disgust sharpened her face.

“What is that woman doing with the baby?”

“She saved him,” Lorenzo said.

Bianca ignored me. “You called the police?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes narrowed. “This family does not invite law enforcement into private matters.”

“My son was drugged.”

“That is an accusation, not a fact.”

Matteo held up the positive test strip.

Bianca barely looked at it. “A cheap screening tool can be wrong.”

Lorenzo turned the laptop toward her. “Sofia left recordings.”

For the first time, Bianca’s control slipped.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“She was ill,” Bianca said. “You remember how frightened she became after the birth.”

“She said someone was poisoning Leo.”

“Sofia suffered severe anxiety.”

“She named the trust.”

Bianca’s eyes moved to Dr. Hale.

He looked away.

Lorenzo pressed play.

Sofia’s voice returned.

“The trust agreement changes if Leo is declared medically incapable. Bianca becomes temporary controller until he turns twenty-five. If he dies before his first birthday, the voting shares return to the senior Rossi branch.”

The room felt suddenly airless.

Bianca gave a tired smile. “That clause was written by your grandfather. It protects the company.”

“It gives you my son’s inheritance.”

“It gives the family stability.”

Lorenzo stepped closer. “Did you make him sick?”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the nursery.

Everyone froze.

Bianca’s hand trembled. “I raised you. I buried your father. I held this family together while you played war in the streets. Do not stand there and accuse me because a dead woman recorded her fears.”

Lorenzo touched his cheek, more surprised than hurt.

Then Bianca looked at me.

“This maid has manipulated you in less than an hour. She enters a forbidden room, puts your child to her body, and suddenly you believe every person who has loved you is a criminal.”

“I didn’t manipulate anyone,” I said.

Bianca walked toward me. “You were hired under false circumstances. Your ex is wearing stolen security credentials. Your fingerprints are probably all over the bottles.”

“She did not prepare them,” Celeste said.

Bianca turned sharply.

Celeste lowered her eyes.

That reaction said more than words.

Police sirens sounded beyond the gates.

Bianca took out her phone. “I have already called Judge Carmichael. Under the emergency protection clause, Leo must be transferred to an independent pediatric facility until this chaos is resolved.”

Lorenzo’s voice dropped. “You called a judge before you arrived?”

“I called someone responsible.”

“How did you know Leo was in danger?”

Bianca hesitated.

No one had told her about the sedative.

No one had told her Leo had crashed.

Yet she had prepared a custody petition before crossing the front door.

Matteo slowly reached for his weapon.

Bianca looked at him. “Think carefully.”

He stopped.

Lorenzo noticed.

“Matteo?”

The older man’s face tightened.

Bianca raised her phone and showed the screen.

An emergency order had already been signed.

LEO ROSSI TO BE REMOVED FROM THE RESIDENCE IMMEDIATELY.

Outside, an ambulance rolled through the gates.

And I realized the people coming to take Leo had been on their way long before anyone called for help.
