Chapter 1 - The Blue Inhaler

Lily Vale was four years old when her father came home early and found her curled on the marble floor of his own house.

Her pale green cardigan had twisted beneath one shoulder.

The skirt of her soft yellow dress was spread across the polished stone.

Her tiny fingers were clawing weakly at the front of her chest.

And the blue rescue inhaler that was supposed to be in her hand was in Meredith Sloan’s.

Meredith was kneeling beside her in the burgundy uniform worn by the senior household staff.

But she was not helping.

She was holding the inhaler just beyond Lily’s reach.

“Please.”

Lily’s voice was barely more than air.

Meredith leaned closer.

“You already used it once this morning.”

Lily tried to pull herself forward.

“I can’t breathe.”

Meredith’s expression hardened.

“You can breathe when you stop pretending.”

The little girl’s knees drew toward her stomach.

Her lips had begun losing their color.

Meredith glanced toward the tall glass doors at the end of the foyer.

She thought she was alone.

She thought Adrian Vale would still be forty miles away at a board meeting.

She thought the security detail had gone with him.

She thought no one would see what happened next.

Meredith pressed the blue inhaler into her palm and closed her fist around it.

“Your father cannot keep rewarding you every time you make yourself sick.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy said give it to me.”

“Your father isn’t here.”

The glass doors opened behind them.

Meredith froze.

A pair of black shoes crossed the threshold.

Then another pair.

Then a third.

Adrian Vale entered first.

He was still wearing the charcoal three-piece suit he had put on before dawn.

Marcus Reed and Owen Shaw entered behind him.

Neither bodyguard spoke.

They did not need to.

The expression on Adrian’s face had already changed the temperature of the room.

He looked at Lily.

Then he looked at the blue inhaler in Meredith’s hand.

Then he looked back at Lily.

“Move away from my daughter.”

Meredith stood so quickly that one knee slipped against the marble.

“Mr. Vale.”

Adrian walked past her.

He did not ask what had happened.

He dropped to one knee beside Lily and reached for her.

Lily’s trembling fingers closed around his sleeve.

“Daddy.”

“I’m here.”

Her breath whistled.

Adrian’s head snapped toward Meredith.

“The inhaler.”

Meredith tightened her hand around it.

“She doesn’t need it.”

Marcus took one step forward.

Meredith finally extended the inhaler.

Adrian ripped it from her hand.

He helped Lily sit against his chest.

He placed the inhaler carefully into her hand and guided her the way her doctor had taught him.

Lily took the medication.

Nothing happened immediately.

Adrian waited.

Every muscle in his jaw remained tight.

Lily tried again.

A thin breath finally entered.

Then another.

Then another.

Her body remained tense, but the panic in her eyes slowly began to ease.

Adrian kept one arm around her.

He never looked away from Meredith.

“What did you do?”

Meredith lifted her hands.

“Nothing.”

“You were standing over my daughter while she couldn’t breathe.”

“She was having a tantrum.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

Owen looked toward Lily.

Adrian did not blink.

“You think that was a tantrum?”

“Lily has learned that breathing episodes get your attention.”

Adrian slowly stood.

Lily remained against his chest.

“She is four.”

Meredith swallowed.

“I understand that.”

“No.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“I don’t think you do.”

Meredith looked toward Marcus and Owen.

“You cannot possibly believe I would hurt her.”

Adrian held up the inhaler.

“You were holding this away from her.”

“She had already used it.”

“That decision belongs to her physician.”

“I was trying to prevent her from becoming dependent.”

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“You are a governess.”

Meredith said nothing.

“You are not her doctor.”

Silence filled the foyer.

“You are not her mother.”

Meredith’s face tightened.

“And after what I just saw, you will never be alone with my daughter again.”

Meredith’s confidence disappeared.

“Mr. Vale, please.”

“Marcus.”

Marcus moved before Adrian finished saying his name.

He took Meredith by the arm.

Owen moved to her other side.

Meredith twisted against them.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Adrian looked down at Lily.

Her breathing was still uneven.

He touched her cheek.

“Call Dr. Hart.”

Owen reached for his phone.

Meredith struggled harder.

“I said I did nothing.”

Adrian finally looked at her again.

“You are going to explain everything.”

“There is nothing to explain.”

“Then explaining it should be easy.”

Meredith’s face went pale.

Lily suddenly gripped Adrian’s lapel.

He immediately looked down.

“What is it?”

She whispered so softly that he almost did not hear her.

“She said not to tell you.”

Adrian went still.

“Tell me what?”

Lily’s eyes moved toward Meredith.

The woman stopped struggling.

Adrian felt the change instantly.

He lowered his voice.

“You can tell me anything.”

Lily pressed her face against his chest.

“She said you would send me away.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Meredith shook her head.

“That is not true.”

Lily flinched at the sound of her voice.

Adrian saw it.

He had seen his daughter frightened before.

He had seen her frightened by thunderstorms.

He had seen her frightened by doctors.

He had seen her frightened after waking from nightmares about her mother.

But he had never seen Lily react to a human voice that way.

“Take Meredith downstairs.”

Adrian’s tone was flat.

Meredith stared at him.

“Downstairs?”

“The security office.”

“You cannot detain me.”

“I can prevent you from leaving with property belonging to this house while my attorneys and the police are called.”

Meredith’s eyes flashed.

“The police?”

Adrian pointed toward his daughter.

“She could have died on that floor.”

“It was an asthma episode.”

“An episode you were refusing to treat.”

Meredith looked toward the doors again.

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Don’t.”

Meredith stopped moving.

Owen opened the service corridor.

Marcus began escorting her away.

Then Lily spoke again.

“She took the other one too.”

Adrian turned.

“What other one?”

Meredith stopped dead.

Lily pointed toward the burgundy pocket of Meredith’s uniform.

Marcus reached inside.

He removed a second blue inhaler.

Adrian stared at it.

Lily’s inhaler was in his hand.

The second inhaler looked almost identical.

Almost.

There was a small strip of silver tape beneath the canister.

Adrian had never seen that mark before.

Owen noticed it.

“So which one was she supposed to use?”

Meredith said nothing.

Adrian walked toward her.

He held both inhalers side by side.

“What is this?”

Meredith stared straight ahead.

“What is the silver mark?”

“I don’t know.”

“You had it in your pocket.”

“I found it.”

“Where?”

Meredith hesitated.

“That is enough.”

Adrian turned to Owen.

“Call Dr. Hart and tell him we have two inhalers.”

Owen nodded.

“Tell him not to discuss this with anyone.”

Meredith suddenly pulled hard against Marcus.

“No.”

Everyone stopped.

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time, Meredith appeared genuinely terrified.

“Do not call Hart.”

Adrian’s gaze narrowed.

“You just made certain I will.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

Meredith’s breathing became shallow.

She looked at Lily.

Then at Adrian.

Then at the two inhalers.

“Mr. Vale.”

Her voice trembled.

“If Dr. Hart tests both of those, this is no longer about me.”

Adrian did not move.

“What does that mean?”

Meredith’s lips parted.

No sound came out.

Marcus watched her carefully.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who gave you the second inhaler?”

Meredith shook her head.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“No.”

Her eyes filled with panic.

“You have no idea what these people will do.”

Adrian’s face went cold.

“These people?”

Meredith closed her eyes.

She had said too much.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Lock down the estate.”

Marcus immediately reached for his radio.

“No staff leaves.”

Owen turned toward the main entrance.

“No vehicles move.”

Adrian continued.

“Freeze every security recording from the last thirty days.”

Meredith opened her eyes.

“You are making this worse.”

Adrian stared at her.

“For whom?”

Meredith said nothing.

Lily suddenly lifted her head from Adrian’s chest.

Her cheeks were wet.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Is Mommy mad at me?”

Adrian’s expression broke for the first time.

“No.”

“Meredith said Mommy got sick because she was bad too.”

The foyer became silent.

Adrian’s hand stopped against Lily’s back.

Claire Vale had been dead for three years.

Her death had been ruled an accident.

A sudden respiratory crisis while driving home from a charity dinner had caused her car to leave the road.

Adrian had spent three years forcing himself to accept that explanation.

Meredith slowly closed her eyes.

Adrian looked at her.

“What did you tell my daughter about Claire?”

Meredith whispered something.

“What?”

“I said nothing.”

Lily shook her head.

“She said Mommy needed the blue medicine.”

Adrian could hear his own pulse.

Lily continued.

“She said Mommy didn’t get it either.”

Meredith’s face drained completely.

Adrian stared at her.

Then he looked at the two inhalers.

One was his daughter’s.

The other carried a silver mark.

And suddenly the worst day of Adrian Vale’s life no longer felt like something that had happened three years ago.

It felt like it had started again.

His phone rang.

Owen looked at the screen.

“Dr. Hart is at the gate.”

Adrian’s gaze never left Meredith.

“Bring him inside.”

Meredith began shaking her head.

“Mr. Vale.”

Adrian ignored her.

“You need to listen to me.”

He turned away.

“You cannot let Elias Hart see that inhaler.”

Adrian stopped.

Meredith’s voice cracked.

“Because if he recognizes it, he will know exactly what happened to your wife.”

May you like

And for the first time since entering the foyer, Adrian forgot how to breathe.
