Chapter 3 - The Nursery Door

Adrian took the stairs two at a time.

“Lily!”

Another scream came from the second floor.

He heard Grace shouting.

“Stay away from the window!”

Emergency lights flickered on.

The corridor filled with dim red illumination.

Owen appeared at the far end with his weapon drawn.

“East wing is clear.”

“Where is Lily?”

“With Grace.”

Adrian reached the guest suite.

Grace stood against the wall with Lily in her arms.

The little girl had buried her face against the housekeeper’s shoulder.

A shattered window lay across the carpet.

Adrian stopped.

“What happened?”

Grace pointed toward the glass.

“Something hit it from outside.”

Owen approached the window.

A small metal object had landed beneath the curtains.

“Don’t touch it.”

He crouched.

It was a steel bearing the size of a marble.

Someone had fired it hard enough to crack the exterior glass.

Not to kill anyone.

To frighten them.

Adrian took Lily.

“I’m here.”

She clung to him.

“Was it Meredith?”

“No.”

He looked at Owen.

“Power?”

“Security says the main breaker was manually interrupted.”

“From where?”

“The basement utility room.”

“Who has access?”

“Senior staff.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“How many?”

“Twenty-seven.”

“Too many.”

Marcus’s voice came through Owen’s radio.

“We have a problem.”

Adrian took the radio.

“Talk.”

“Meredith is gone.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“What?”

“She was in the security office with me.”

“You were with her.”

“I stepped into the corridor when the power failed.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe ten seconds.”

“And she disappeared?”

“The service door unlocked during the outage.”

Adrian looked at Grace.

“Take Lily into the safe room.”

Grace nodded.

Lily tightened her arms.

“No.”

Adrian crouched.

“I need you to go with Grace.”

“No.”

“Sweetheart.”

“Don’t leave me.”

The fear in her voice cut deeper than anything else that night.

Adrian touched her hair.

“I am not leaving the house.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Lily looked toward the corridor.

“Meredith knows the secret door.”

Adrian went still.

“What secret door?”

Lily pointed toward the nursery.

“The one behind Mommy’s stars.”

Grace frowned.

“I don’t know what she means.”

Adrian did.

Claire had painted silver stars on one wall of Lily’s original nursery.

After Claire died, Adrian had ordered the room left untouched for almost a year.

Then he had finally permitted the furniture to be changed.

But the painted wall remained.

Adrian handed Lily to Grace.

“Safe room.”

Grace left.

Owen followed Adrian.

They crossed the corridor toward the old nursery.

The door was open.

Adrian stopped outside it.

He had specifically ordered the room sealed minutes earlier.

“Who opened this?”

“No idea.”

Owen checked the frame.

“No forced entry.”

Adrian entered.

The emergency lights barely reached inside.

The moon painted pale rectangles across the floor.

The room had not been used regularly for years.

A reading chair stood near the window.

A shelf still held several of Claire’s favorite children’s books.

And silver stars covered the wall opposite the crib alcove.

Adrian approached them.

He ran his fingers across the paint.

Nothing.

Owen examined the baseboard.

“Sir.”

One section showed faint scratches.

Owen pushed against it.

The panel shifted.

Adrian stared.

He had lived in the house for twelve years.

He had never known the compartment existed.

Owen found a recessed latch.

The panel opened inward.

A narrow storage cavity appeared.

Inside sat a metal box.

Adrian reached toward it.

Owen stopped him.

“Let me.”

He checked the compartment.

“No wires.”

The box was removed.

It had no lock.

Adrian lifted the lid.

Inside lay a pink baby blanket.

A photograph.

A small digital recorder.

And a sealed envelope.

Adrian recognized Claire’s handwriting immediately.

FOR ADRIAN.

His hands began to shake.

He opened the envelope.

There was only one sheet of paper.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, I either lost my nerve or I lost the chance to tell you myself.

Do not trust the official explanation if something happens to me.

Someone has been changing things inside this house.

My medicine.

Lily’s feeding schedule.

Security logs.

Small things first.

Then things that could kill.

I thought I was imagining it.

I am not.

I know because I tested one of the inhalers.

I also know whoever is doing this has access through someone we trust.

I recorded one conversation.

I could not identify both voices.

One of them said Lily’s name.

Please protect our daughter.

And Adrian, no matter what anyone tells you, I never wanted to leave you.

Claire.

Adrian read the final sentence twice.

Then a third time.

After Claire’s death, investigators had found a packed suitcase in her car.

The suitcase had fueled months of speculation.

Some claimed she had been leaving Adrian.

Others claimed the marriage had been failing.

Adrian had never believed it completely.

But grief had made every doubt poisonous.

Now Claire had answered him from three years in the past.

Owen picked up the recorder.

“There’s still a card inside.”

“Play it.”

Owen pressed the button.

Static filled the nursery.

Then Claire’s voice.

“It’s March seventeenth, eleven forty-three p.m.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

He had not heard her voice unexpectedly in years.

“I’m leaving this recording because someone entered the west medical cabinet again.”

A door clicked in the recording.

Claire became silent.

Footsteps followed.

Then two voices appeared in the distance.

The first was distorted.

Female.

“You said the substitution would only frighten her.”

The second voice was male.

“It did.”

“She nearly collapsed.”

“She recovered.”

“I’m done.”

“No.”

“I said I’m done.”

The male voice became clearer.

“You do not stop until the trust changes.”

Adrian looked at Owen.

The recording continued.

“What if Adrian finds out?”

“He won’t.”

“And the child?”

A pause.

“The child is leverage.”

Adrian felt his stomach turn.

Claire shifted somewhere behind the recorder.

The woman spoke again.

“I will not hurt a baby.”

“You already have.”

The recording ended.

Silence filled the nursery.

Owen exhaled slowly.

“Do you recognize either voice?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at the recorder.

“But Claire might have.”

Owen lifted the photograph from the box.

It showed Claire at a charity gala.

Three people stood behind her.

Conrad Hale.

Victoria Laurent.

And Julian Price, Claire’s older brother.

Adrian stared at the picture.

Victoria had not been romantically involved with him when Claire was alive.

She had been a junior executive at Laurent Hotels.

Conrad had served as the Vale family attorney.

Julian had managed Claire’s charitable foundation.

Three people.

Three connections.

One photograph.

Owen turned it over.

Claire had written two words on the back.

ASK JULIAN.

Adrian’s phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Vale.”

A woman breathed on the other end.

“Daddy?”

Adrian froze.

It was not Lily.

It was a recording of Lily.

Then Meredith’s voice appeared.

“You should have left the nursery closed.”

Adrian’s entire body hardened.

“Where are you?”

“Not where Marcus thinks.”

“You have thirty seconds to tell me what you know.”

“I don’t have thirty seconds.”

“Meredith.”

“They know you found Claire’s box.”

“Who?”

“I tried to warn you.”

“Who?”

A door slammed on her end.

Meredith gasped.

“Please.”

Her voice changed.

She sounded terrified.

“Tell Lily I am sorry.”

The call ended.

Adrian called back.

Nothing.

Owen checked his screen.

“Untraceable relay.”

Adrian looked toward the open secret compartment.

Someone had cut the electricity.

Someone had freed Meredith.

Someone had frightened Lily.

And someone knew Claire’s hiding place had been discovered almost immediately.

That meant the threat was not outside the Vale estate.

It was still inside.

Marcus entered the nursery.

His face was tense.

“We checked the grounds.”

“And?”

“Meredith never crossed the perimeter.”

Adrian stared at him.

“Then where is she?”

Marcus looked toward the floor.

“We found her shoes in the basement.”

Owen frowned.

“Only her shoes?”

Marcus nodded.

“And blood on the service stairs.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“How much?”

“Not enough to know what happened.”

“Cameras?”

“Still recovering.”

Adrian looked around the nursery.

“Search every room.”

Marcus hesitated.

“There are eighty-two rooms.”

“Then search eighty-two rooms.”

“Yes, sir.”

Adrian’s phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from Conrad Hale.

Dinner moved to eight.

I have something important to discuss regarding Lily’s trust.

Adrian looked at the words.

Then at Claire’s photograph.

Conrad was standing directly behind her.

He was smiling.

Owen noticed the message.

“You think he knows?”

“I think everyone knows something.”

Adrian folded Claire’s letter and placed it inside his jacket.

“Do not tell Conrad about Meredith.”

Owen nodded.

“Do not tell Victoria about the recorder.”

Another nod.

“Do not tell Julian we found the photograph.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Then who do we trust?”

Adrian stared toward the corridor where his daughter had disappeared into the safe room.

“No one who was here when Claire died.”

A sound came from inside the wall.

All three men turned.

A faint knock.

Then another.

Marcus drew his weapon.

Owen moved toward the secret compartment.

The sound came again.

Three weak taps.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Meredith?”

No answer.

Owen pulled the wall panel wider.

A narrow maintenance passage extended beyond the storage cavity.

They had assumed it ended after several feet.

It did not.

Marcus entered first.

Twenty seconds later, he shouted.

“I found her.”

Adrian followed.

Meredith lay on the floor of the narrow passage.

Her burgundy uniform was torn at one shoulder.

There was a cut near her hairline.

Her hands were tied.

Her eyes opened when Adrian knelt beside her.

“Who did this?”

Meredith tried to speak.

Adrian leaned closer.

She whispered one word.

“Conrad.”

Then her eyes rolled closed.

Adrian stared at her.

Behind him, Owen’s radio crackled.

“Mr. Vale.”

A security officer sounded breathless.

“You need to come downstairs.”

Adrian took the radio.

“What happened?”

“Conrad Hale just arrived.”

Adrian looked at Meredith.

The officer continued.

“And he is not alone.”

“Who is with him?”

A pause followed.

Then came the answer Adrian had not expected.

May you like

“Your fiancée.”
