CHAPTER 2 — THE HIDDEN WILL

Christopher carried Emma into the mansion, refusing to let anyone else hold her.

Wrapped in a warm blanket, the little girl buried her face against his shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Daddy," she whispered.

"I wasn't trying to be bad."

Christopher's heart shattered.

"You never have to apologize for surviving."

Behind them, Juliette was escorted into the main hall by security.

Estelle Pierce entered moments later, elegant as always, though the color had drained from her face.

"You've misunderstood everything," she said calmly.

Christopher turned toward his family attorney.

"Bring my father's file."

Within minutes, an elderly lawyer arrived carrying a sealed mahogany box.

"It was your father's final instruction," he explained.

"He ordered that this box remain unopened unless Emma's safety was ever threatened."

The room fell silent.

Inside lay a handwritten letter.

Christopher unfolded it with trembling hands.

His father's words filled the library.

"Christopher, if you are reading this, someone has placed greed above a child's life."

Another envelope contained a revised will.

The attorney spoke quietly.

"Your father transferred forty percent of the Pierce family trust into Emma's protected inheritance."

Estelle's composure finally broke.

"That isn't possible."

The attorney nodded.

"It has been legally registered for seven years."

"If anyone attempted to harm or intimidate Emma for financial gain..."

"...that individual immediately forfeited every benefit from the family trust."

Christopher slowly looked at his mother.

"You knew."

May you like

Estelle couldn't answer.

Her silence told him everything.
