The Price of Cruelty / Chapter 1 / 3

Chapter 1: A Mother's Fury

The scream shattered more than the music.

It shattered every illusion in the room.

Sophia Carter turned so quickly that the champagne glass slipped from her hand and exploded across the marble floor.

Her six-year-old daughter, Lily, stood in the center of the ballroom, tears streaming down her face while Victoria Sterling—the city's self-appointed queen of high society—held her tightly by the wrist.

"I said leave," Victoria snapped. "This event is for respectable families."

Lily sobbed.

"My mommy told me to wait here..."

Victoria yanked harder.

"I don't care who your mother is."

Sophia reached them in seconds.

"Take your hands off my daughter."

Victoria slowly turned.

The ballroom fell silent.

"Oh," Victoria said with a mocking smile. "So you're the mother."

She glanced at Sophia's elegant navy gown before looking her up and down with open contempt.

"I assumed she belonged to one of the catering staff."

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Nobody laughed.

Sophia gently pulled Lily into her arms.

"Did she hurt you?"

Lily nodded.

"My arm..."

Sophia looked at the bright red marks already forming around her daughter's wrist.

Her expression became frighteningly calm.

"You have exactly five seconds to apologize to my daughter."

Victoria laughed.

"Apologize?"

"To a child?"

"You should be grateful I removed her before she embarrassed the guests."

"My grandson's birthday gala isn't a playground."

A quiet voice interrupted.

"It's my birthday."

Everyone turned.

A little boy stepped forward.

Seven-year-old Ethan Sterling.

Victoria's grandson.

He looked at his grandmother with tears in his eyes.

"I invited Lily."

"You said I could invite anyone from school."

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"Ethan..."

"No."

The boy shook his head.

"She's my best friend."

"You made her cry."

The room grew even quieter.

Children often told the truth adults tried to hide.

Sophia knelt beside Lily.

"We're okay."

Then she stood and looked directly at Victoria.

"You didn't just insult my daughter."

"You assaulted her."

Victoria folded her arms.

"And what exactly are you going to do about it?"

May you like

Sophia smiled.

"We'll find out together."
