Chapter 2 – The Kitchen Never Forgot

Silence settled over the mansion kitchen.

No one moved.

The chefs stood frozen beside steaming pots and silver serving trays.

Margaret Ashford's fingers tightened around the marble countertop until her knuckles turned white.

Adrian never took his eyes off Lena.

"The report..." he whispered. "The scar was described exactly like that."

Lena looked confused.

"I've had it for as long as I can remember."

Adrian slowly pulled out his phone.

Within seconds, he opened a scanned police report that had remained hidden in the family's private archives for more than twenty years.

He enlarged one paragraph.

Infant female. Approximately six months old. Distinct lightning-shaped laceration on the left side of the neck caused by shattered nursery window during the abduction.

Every word matched.

The kitchen staff exchanged nervous glances.

Margaret forced a laugh.

"Coincidences happen."

Adrian looked at her.

"Then explain the towel."

No answer.

Instead, Margaret turned toward the staff.

"Everyone back to work."

Nobody obeyed.

Executive Chef Roberto slowly stepped forward.

"There is something..."

He hesitated.

"...I've never told anyone."

The room fell silent again.

"When I started here twenty-five years ago, the old head chef warned me never to remove the original pantry shelves."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

"He said your grandfather ordered them sealed forever."

"For what reason?"

"I was never told."

Adrian walked straight toward the oldest pantry in the mansion.

The wooden shelves hadn't been moved in decades.

Dust covered every corner.

He grabbed the edge.

"Help me."

Three kitchen staff pushed together.

With a loud crack, the heavy shelves slid away.

Behind them...

A narrow brick compartment appeared inside the wall.

Inside rested a weathered wooden box wrapped in faded kitchen linen.

The embroidered Ashford family crest was still visible.

Margaret's face lost all color.

"No..."

Adrian carefully lifted the box onto the counter.

Inside were dozens of yellowed documents.

A baby bracelet.

A tiny silver rattle.

And one final envelope marked:

If the child is ever found.

May you like

No one spoke.

The kitchen had hidden the truth for twenty-four years.
