The envelope shook in Adrian's hands.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten confession from his late father.
Every person in the kitchen leaned closer.
"My daughter disappeared on the night of the storm.
She was found alive before dawn by one of the estate's gardeners.
But before I arrived, my wife made another decision.
She feared the child's injury would destroy the family's public image.
She ordered the baby taken away and reported missing.
She believed another child would come.
One without scars.
One without shame.
I have regretted my silence every day since."
The room froze.
Adrian slowly lowered the letter.
His voice cracked.
"You knew."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I was trying to protect this family."
"You destroyed it."
Tears finally filled her eyes.
"The newspapers would have blamed me."
"So you abandoned your own daughter?"
Margaret couldn't answer.
Lena stood motionless.
Everything she had believed about herself disappeared in a single moment.
She had never been unwanted.
She had been hidden.
Executive Chef Roberto quietly unfolded the old kitchen towel from the box.
In one corner, stitched by hand, were two tiny initials.
L.A.
"Lena Ashford," Adrian whispered.
