The street was dead silent, but it wasn't peaceful.
People rushed past, keeping their heads down, pretending not to see the broken world around them.
Shivering by a broken concrete wall was an eight-year-old girl. In tattered clothes and ruined shoes, she curled into a ball to survive the freezing air. Starving and exhausted, her eyes had lost all hope.
Everyone ignored her.
Until a second girl stopped.
Same age, but a world apart.
Wearing a warm camel coat and holding a fresh loaf of bread, she froze when she saw the homeless child sitting alone in the cold.
She watched her quietly for a moment.
"Are you alright?" she whispered.
No answer came.
The poor girl was too tired to believe that anyone truly cared.
The girl in the coat slowly stepped closer and broke the bread in half.
"Please… this is for you."
The hungry girl stared at the bread like it was something magical.
Her shaky hand reached forward.
"Thank you…" she whispered. "I'm so hungry."
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she took the first bite.
The girl in the coat didn't leave.
Instead, she sat beside her on the dirty pavement and wrapped her arms around her.
For a moment, the freezing wind disappeared.
But then—
A heavy door behind them suddenly slammed open.
Both girls turned around.
A tall man in an expensive coat stood there, staring at them.
His face was full of shock.
"Emily?" he said.
The girl in the camel coat slowly stood up.
"Yes, Dad?"
The man's eyes moved toward the starving child.
"Who is she?"
Emily looked back at the little girl beside her.
"Her name is Lily."
The man frowned.
"You brought a stranger here?"
Emily lowered her head.
"No, Dad… I found someone everyone else abandoned."
The man's expression changed.
