The man stepped closer, but Lily immediately pulled away.
She expected anger.
She expected someone to tell her to leave.
That was what always happened.
"Please don't send me away," Lily whispered.
The words stopped the man.
His name was Daniel. He was a businessman who owned several buildings in the city, but he had spent years walking past people like Lily without ever seeing them.
He looked at his daughter.
"Emily… why did you stop?"
Emily looked confused.
"Because she was cold."
Daniel stayed silent.
"Because she was hungry."
She held up the remaining piece of bread.
"And because I knew I couldn't eat this while she was starving."

For years, he had taught Emily to be successful.

He took off his expensive coat and placed it around Lily's shoulders.
"What's your family name, Lily?"
The little girl looked down.
"I don't have one anymore."
Daniel's heart sank.
After asking around, they discovered Lily had been living alone for months after losing her parents in an accident.
She had survived by sleeping near abandoned buildings and hoping someone would notice her.
But nobody did.

That night, Daniel took both girls to his home.
Lily sat quietly at the dinner table, afraid to touch anything.
"This is too much," she whispered.
Emily smiled.
"No, Lily. This is normal."
Daniel watched them.
He realized something.
A child who had almost nothing had given away half of the only thing she owned.
A loaf of bread.
And somehow, she had given his family something much bigger.
A reminder of humanity.
But the next morning, something unexpected happened.
Daniel found a small note beside Lily's bed.
It said:
"Thank you for saving me. But I need to go back."

"Lily!"

"I can't stay here forever," she said.
