Chapter 1: The Unexpected Witness

The dining room remained silent.

The maid knelt motionless on the marble floor while drops of soup slid from her hair onto the polished tiles below.

Nobody dared to speak.

Nobody dared to move.

Then a voice came from the far end of the table.

"That's enough."

The words were calm.

But they instantly cut through the tension.

Every head turned.

An elderly man slowly pushed back his chair and stood.

He was one of the honored guests invited to the dinner.

A quiet man.

Respected.

Powerful.

And until now, completely silent.

The lady of the house frowned.

"Excuse me?"

The old man walked toward the maid.

Ignoring everyone else.

Ignoring the hostess.

Ignoring the uncomfortable stares around him.

When he reached the young woman, he paused.

Then he gently handed her his handkerchief.

"Stand up, child."

The maid looked terrified.

Her eyes darted toward her employer.

"I... I can't, sir."

The old man's expression darkened.

"Who told you that you couldn't?"

The room grew even quieter.

The hostess folded her arms.

"This is a family matter."

"No."

The old man's voice became firm.

"This is abuse."

A visible shock spread through the guests.

Nobody had ever spoken to the woman like that.

Not in her own house.

Not in front of witnesses.

The hostess laughed coldly.

"You know nothing about her."

The old man looked down at the maid.

Then he noticed something.

A small silver pendant hanging from her neck.

Half-hidden beneath her stained uniform.

The moment he saw it, his eyes widened.

His breathing stopped.

Because he recognized it.

Immediately.

Impossible.

Yet unmistakable.

Twenty years ago, that exact pendant had belonged to someone he once knew.

Someone who had disappeared without a trace.

Someone connected to a tragedy that had never been solved.

Slowly, he turned back to the trembling maid.

"What is your name?"

The young woman hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Emily."

The handkerchief slipped from the old man's fingers.

May you like

Because at that moment...

Everything changed.
