Chapter 1 – Sunrise Changed Everything

The black SUV rolled through the gates of Escalante Global just after midnight.

The forty-eight-story glass tower dominated the city skyline, its top floors still glowing with light.

Inside, the executive board was waiting.

Not because of Andrew.

Because of me.

The moment I stepped into the boardroom, every director stood.

At the head of the table, my father, Alejandro Escalante, looked at the bruise already darkening across my cheek.

His expression hardened.

"Who did this?"

I placed the torn divorce papers Andrew had shoved into my handbag two weeks earlier onto the polished table.

"My husband."

Silence settled over the room.

Then I placed Margaret's empty jewelry box beside them.

"And tonight they accused me of stealing a necklace they hid themselves."

Our chief legal officer opened a thick binder.

"Mrs. Escalante, every document is ready."

Four years earlier, before my marriage, I had transferred control of dozens of companies into independent trusts to avoid accusations of favoritism after marrying Andrew.

Andrew believed he had built his business through talent.

He never realized every major contract, every investor, every emergency loan, and every silent bailout had originated from Escalante Global.

Without those agreements...

His empire wasn't worth much.

I looked around the table.

"Execute every clause."

The attorneys nodded.

Within minutes—

Credit lines were suspended.

Investment guarantees were withdrawn.

Corporate accounts were frozen pending ownership review.

Licensing agreements were terminated.

By sunrise...

Andrew's financial empire would be standing on air.

Andrew woke the next morning to thirty-seven missed calls.

His chief financial officer was screaming.

"Our operating accounts are frozen!"

"The banks just suspended every line of credit!"

"Our biggest investors walked away overnight!"

Andrew laughed.

"This has to be some mistake."

"It isn't," the CFO replied.

"They all cited breach-of-control provisions."

"What breach?"

A long silence followed.

Then one sentence changed everything.

"Every agreement was guaranteed by Escalante Global."

Andrew's blood ran cold.

He turned toward Brenda, who was still lying comfortably in his bed.

"What does Mariana's father have to do with this?"

Brenda suddenly wasn't smiling anymore.
