Chapter 4 – The Woman They Never Truly Knew

One year later...
The mansion Andrew once called "his" had been sold.
The proceeds were distributed to creditors.
Brenda accepted a plea agreement for filing a false police report, conspiracy, and evidence tampering.
Margaret disappeared from high society after the scandal destroyed her reputation.
Andrew took a modest accounting job in another state.
No one recognized him anymore.
No one cared.
As for me...
I stood in front of the newly opened Escalante Center for Women's Legal Recovery.
A place offering free legal representation, emergency housing, financial counseling, and business grants to women escaping abusive relationships.
My father stood beside me as I cut the ribbon.
"You could have rebuilt his empire," he said quietly.
"I know."
"But some buildings should stay in ruins."
That evening I returned to the penthouse overlooking the city.
My phone vibrated.
One unread message.
From Andrew.
"I finally understand everything you did for me. I don't expect forgiveness. I only hope one day you'll remember me before I became that man."
I read it once.
Then deleted it.
Not because I hated him.
Because I no longer carried him with me.
I walked onto the balcony as the city lights stretched endlessly below.
The bruise on my cheek had long since disappeared.
The scar on my heart had finally begun to heal.
People often believed power was measured by money, mansions, or family names.
They were wrong.
Real power was walking away from the people who broke you...
Without becoming like them.
Andrew thought he had thrown a helpless wife out of his mansion.
Instead...
He escorted the architect of his fortune out the front door.
And the moment that door closed behind me...
Everything he believed he owned began to disappear.
May you like
Not because I destroyed his world.
Because I simply stopped holding it together.
