CHAPTER 2 — THE LETTER INSIDE THE SAFE

The annual Vance Foundation Gala glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Politicians smiled for cameras.

Business leaders toasted another record-breaking year.

Isabella Vance stood at the center of it all, her infant son sleeping quietly in her arms.

No one noticed how tightly she held him.

Except one person.

The estate's elderly housekeeper, Margaret.

As Isabella passed, Margaret slipped a small brass key into her hand.

"It belonged to your father-in-law," she whispered.

"He wanted you to have it when the time was right."

Before Isabella could ask another question, Margaret disappeared into the crowd.

Late that night, while the mansion slept, Isabella climbed to the abandoned west wing.

Hidden behind an old portrait was a small wall safe.

The key fit perfectly.

Inside lay only three things.

A leather journal.

A sealed envelope.

A flash drive.

The envelope bore one sentence in elegant handwriting.

For Isabella—when silence becomes more dangerous than truth.

Her hands trembled as she unfolded the letter.

It was written by her late father-in-law.

"The Vance fortune was never built by the men whose names appear on the buildings. It was built by the women whose sacrifices were hidden behind them."

Another line stopped her breath.

"If you are reading this, someone is trying to control you the same way they controlled my wife."

Isabella slowly looked toward the sleeping baby.

The prison she thought had begun with her...
