CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO FEARED THE TRUTH

The next morning, Isabella confronted her husband, Alexander, inside his private study.
She placed the journal on his desk.
"You knew."
Alexander's face lost all color.
"I hoped you would never find it."
She opened the journal.
Every page documented financial decisions, family secrets, and personal regrets.
It revealed that Alexander's father had repeatedly opposed the family's tradition of controlling spouses through financial dependence and silence.
He had planned to transfer a significant portion of the family trust directly to Isabella after the birth of her child, ensuring she would always have financial independence.
But he died before the documents were finalized.
Alexander lowered his eyes.
"My father wanted to change everything."
"So why didn't you?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Afraid of whom?"
He looked toward the portrait of his grandfather hanging above the fireplace.
"The board."
"The family."
"The legacy."
Isabella shook her head.
"No."
"You were afraid of disappointing people who only loved your obedience."
She stood.
"I'm done living inside someone else's expectations."
That afternoon, during the foundation's annual board meeting, Isabella entered carrying the leather journal.
