CHAPTER 2 — The Name She Refused to Say

The silver tray spun across the marble floor before finally coming to rest.

Not a single guest moved.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Champagne glasses remained suspended halfway to waiting lips.

The woman in white, Regina Blackwood, stared at the waitress with open disbelief.

"No one has ever spoken to me like that."

The young waitress didn't flinch.

"My mother once told me something."

Regina folded her arms.

"And what was that?"

The waitress met her eyes.

"People who demand others kneel usually fear standing beside them."

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Regina laughed.

"You've forgotten who you are."

The waitress slowly untied her black apron.

"No."

"I've finally remembered."

She folded the apron neatly and placed it on the serving cart.

"My name isn't Emily Carter."

"My legal name is..."

She paused.

"...Evelyn Blackwood."

The room went silent.

Regina's smile disappeared.

Someone dropped a champagne flute.

It shattered across the marble.

An elderly man near the fireplace whispered,

"That's impossible."

Regina recovered quickly.

"Security."

"Remove her."

Four guards stepped forward.

Before they could reach her, another voice echoed through the ballroom.

"Nobody touches my client."

Every head turned.

A distinguished man in a charcoal suit entered through the grand doors.

Behind him came two federal marshals.

And a woman carrying several thick legal binders.

The man extended a business card.

"David Lang."

"Attorney for Evelyn Blackwood."

Regina's heartbeat quickened.

She knew that name.

Because David Lang had represented her late husband's estate.

The very estate she believed no one could challenge.

David calmly placed a sealed envelope on the grand piano.

"The original will."

"The DNA report."

May you like

"And twenty-six years of concealed trust records."

Regina's perfectly manicured hand began to tremble.
