CHAPTER 3 — The Empire Built on One Lie

The ballroom transformed from a gala into a courtroom.

Guests no longer whispered.

They listened.

David opened the first binder.

"Twenty-six years ago, Arthur Blackwood signed a revised will."

"It named two heirs."

"His newborn daughter..."

"...Evelyn Blackwood."

He looked toward Regina.

"The child disappeared three weeks later."

Regina remained silent.

David continued.

"The public was told the infant had died."

He opened another file.

"She hadn't."

Instead, Evelyn had been secretly placed with another family after Arthur's fatal plane crash.

Regina had paid a private investigator to erase every official record connecting the little girl to the Blackwood fortune.

For decades...

Everyone believed Regina had inherited the empire alone.

Then an elderly woman slowly stood from the back of the ballroom.

Margaret Ellis.

The Blackwood family's former nanny.

She walked directly toward Evelyn.

"I've waited twenty-six years to tell you."

With trembling hands, she removed a tiny silver locket from around her neck.

Inside were two baby photographs.

One belonged to Evelyn.

The other showed Arthur Blackwood holding his newborn daughter in the hospital.

"I promised your father I'd protect this."

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

Margaret nodded toward Regina.

"She paid people to make your existence disappear."

Regina finally spoke.

"You have no proof."

David smiled gently.

"We weren't finished."

The federal marshals projected security footage onto the ballroom's massive screen.

Old banking records.

Secret wire transfers.

Adoption documents.

Bribed officials.

Every piece fit together.

Then came the final recording.

Arthur Blackwood himself.

Recorded two days before his death.

"If anything happens to me..."

"My daughter inherits everything."

"No matter what anyone says."

May you like

Regina closed her eyes.

She knew it was over.
