Trump Ally Promises CNN Overhaul If Paramount Succeeds in Warner Bros. Takeover

Ellison Family Emerges at Center of High-Stakes Media Battle That Could Reshape CNN

A major political and corporate confrontation is unfolding in the American media industry, with billionaire technology entrepreneur Larry Ellison and his son David Ellison now playing pivotal roles in a potential takeover battle that could dramatically change the future of CNN.

Sources familiar with the discussions say the Ellisons have privately reassured President Donald Trump that if their company, Paramount Global, succeeds in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) through a massive $108 billion hostile bid, they plan to implement sweeping reforms at CNN — a network Trump has frequently criticized and labeled “fake news.”

The move comes only days after Netflix announced a separate $72 billion deal aimed at purchasing Warner’s film studios and HBO operations. Under the Netflix proposal, however, CNN would not be included in the acquisition and would instead be spun off as an independent company.

Paramount’s offer takes a different approach. The Ellison-backed bid explicitly includes CNN and signals an intention to dramatically reshape the network’s structure, leadership, and editorial direction.

According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, David Ellison held private discussions in Washington where he informed senior Trump administration officials that CNN would undergo what he described as a “fundamental cultural and editorial reset” if Paramount gains control.

Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle and one of the wealthiest figures in the technology world, reportedly went even further during those conversations. He discussed the possibility of replacing several high-profile CNN anchors, including Erin Burnett and Brianna Keilar, two journalists whom Trump has publicly criticized in the past.

One White House official familiar with the conversations said the president has long believed CNN’s current leadership is openly hostile toward him and views a change in ownership as overdue.

“The president wants new ownership and meaningful changes to the network’s programming,” the official said. “He believes the current leadership has created an environment that is consistently antagonistic.”

The timing of the discussions is significant. The Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, which ultimately decides whether large media mergers are approved, operates within the executive branch. As a result, maintaining good relations with the White House could prove critical for either deal.

Observers also noted that Larry and David Ellison were recently seen sitting with Trump in the presidential box during the Kennedy Center Honors, an appearance that occurred just two days before Paramount unveiled its counteroffer.

Reports from The Guardian further indicate that Larry Ellison personally contacted Trump shortly after the Netflix-Warner announcement. During the call, he reportedly argued that allowing Netflix to absorb Warner’s major assets would give Silicon Valley companies overwhelming influence over the streaming landscape.

David Ellison has publicly outlined his broader strategy for the future of news within a combined Paramount media empire. In an interview with CNBC, he said the company hopes to create a large, unified news operation that would merge CNN and CBS News into a single, powerful division.

“Our goal is to build a scaled news organization that is in the trust business and the truth business,” David Ellison said, adding that the network should appeal to the large segment of Americans he describes as the political middle.

The proposed structure would reportedly place the combined CNN–CBS operation under the leadership of journalist Bari Weiss, the former New York Times columnist who recently became editor-in-chief at CBS News. Since taking that role, Weiss has attempted to reposition the network with what supporters describe as a more “anti-woke” editorial approach.
