Chapter 1 - The Woman on the Dance Floor

The ballroom went silent so suddenly that Sarah could hear Leo crying behind her.

Victoria Sterling’s raised hand remained frozen inches from Sarah’s face.

Julian Vance stood between them, his expression colder than anyone in the room had ever seen.

“Do not lay a finger on her.”

Victoria stared at him as though he had spoken in another language.

“Julian, this woman embarrassed me in front of my guests.”

Sarah pulled Leo against her side.

The seven-year-old buried his face against her uniform.

He was wearing a tiny black tuxedo, but his bow tie had come loose and tears streaked both cheeks.

Julian looked at Victoria.

“She is not some servant you can humiliate for entertainment.”

Victoria laughed nervously.

“Then what exactly is she?”

Julian’s answer struck the ballroom harder than a scream.

“She is Leo’s real mother.”

Whispers erupted among the guests.

Victoria’s face lost its color.

“That is impossible.”

Leo lifted his head.

“She is my mommy.”

Victoria looked from the boy to Sarah and then back to Julian.

Everyone in Manhattan society knew Leo had been spending time with Julian Vance for the past three months.

Rumors claimed the child was the son of an old family friend.

Others believed Julian was preparing to adopt him.

Nobody knew the truth.

Not yet.

Julian crouched beside Leo.

“I’m sorry you had to see this.”

Sarah stiffened.

She still did not completely trust Julian.

He had only entered Leo’s life ninety-three days earlier.

For seven years, Sarah had raised their son alone.

Julian had not known Leo existed.

At least, that was what he claimed.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Julian, you cannot seriously expect me to believe that your child’s mother has been scrubbing floors in my family’s hotel.”

Sarah’s jaw tightened.

“I work for my son.”

Victoria turned toward her.

“And apparently you slept your way into something better.”

Julian moved before Sarah could answer.

“Enough.”

His voice carried through the ballroom.

“If you insult Sarah or Leo one more time, the Sterling-Vance agreement is finished.”

Victoria’s father, Conrad Sterling, immediately stood from the head table.

“Julian, perhaps everyone should calm down.”

“No.”

Julian looked toward Conrad.

“For years, your family has mistaken my silence for weakness.”

Then he faced Victoria again.

“Touch Sarah again, and by tomorrow morning you will discover exactly how much of your family’s empire exists because I allowed it to.”

Sarah felt hundreds of eyes settle on her.

She hated being watched.

She hated being discussed.

Most of all, she hated that Leo was trembling.

She took his hand.

“We’re leaving.”

Julian reached toward her.

“Sarah, wait.”

She stopped.

Before he could continue, an elderly banquet employee rushed toward them carrying a white envelope.

“Ms. Collins.”

Sarah recognized the woman as Mrs. Delgado from payroll.

The employee looked terrified.

“I found this in the old personnel archives.”

She lowered her voice.

“It has your name on it.”

Sarah stared at the envelope.

Across the front, in handwriting she had not seen in seven years, were four words.

FOR SARAH BEFORE SHE LEAVES.

And beneath them was Julian Vance’s signature.
