Chapter 11 - The Man Beside Julian
Miles Carter had worked beside Julian for eleven years.
He had attended Leo’s first meeting with Julian.
He had recommended caution.
He had warned Julian not to tell Sarah too much about the family trust.
He had also negotiated the upcoming Sterling-Vance merger.
Julian felt physically sick.
Miles arrived at Vance headquarters expecting a routine board meeting.
Instead, Marcus locked the conference room door.
Julian dropped the banking records onto the table.
Miles looked at them.
Then he sat down.
“You found it.”
Sarah stood behind Julian.
“You knew about Leo?”
Miles glanced at her.
“Not at first.”
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
Sarah’s fingers curled.
“And you did nothing?”
Miles sighed.
“You do not understand what the company looked like then.”
“I understand my son was erased.”
Miles looked toward Julian.
“Your father had just died.”
“The company was vulnerable.”
“The Sterling merger was supposed to stabilize everything.”
Julian stared at the man he had trusted.
“So you helped Conrad.”
“I protected Vance Capital.”
“You protected yourself.”
Miles did not deny it.
Julian asked the question Sarah feared.
“Did Victoria know everything?”
Miles laughed bitterly.
“Victoria knew enough.”
“Conrad was the architect.”
“Henry handled documents.”
“I handled money.”
“And Victoria made sure Sarah disappeared.”
Sarah’s throat tightened.
“The letter?”
Miles nodded.
“She wrote it.”
“And Julian’s signature?”
“She copied it.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
For eight years, she had hated Julian for words he never wrote.
Julian moved toward Miles.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Not worth it.”
Miles leaned back.
“You think exposing this fixes everything?”
Julian glared at him.
“It starts.”
Miles smiled.
“No.”
“It destroys you too.”
He explained that dozens of confidential financial decisions connected Vance Capital to Sterling Hotels.
If prosecutors froze Sterling assets, Vance investors could panic.
Thousands of employees could lose jobs.
Retirement accounts could collapse.
Sarah understood immediately.
Conrad had tied the companies together deliberately.
He had built a financial hostage situation.
Julian could expose him.
But innocent people might pay the price.
Miles stood.
“You want revenge?”
“Fine.”
“Burn Conrad.”
“But understand that his house is connected to yours.”
Julian looked through the glass wall at hundreds of employees working below.
For the first time, Sarah saw how heavy his power actually was.
Then Marcus received a message.
He handed his phone to Julian.
Conrad Sterling had scheduled a press conference for that afternoon.
The headline appeared seconds later.
STERLING FAMILY TO REVEAL SHOCKING EVIDENCE AGAINST JULIAN VANCE.
