Chapter 1 - THE ARREST IN THE GREAT HALL

For one stunned second, nobody in the great hall moved.

Victoria stood near the balcony doors with the old walnut heirloom box clutched against her chest.

The papers she had threatened to destroy were scattered across the marble floor around her heels.

Mark remained between Victoria and the staircase, breathing hard but refusing to take another step toward her.

He had learned enough about his sister that night to know she wanted him angry.

She wanted him reckless.

She wanted one moment she could twist into a story where she was the victim.

Then the main doors opened.

Two uniformed officers entered first.

Behind them came Detective Laura Chen, a woman Mark had met three hours earlier when he reported the break-in at his house.

Victoria's face changed immediately.

The arrogance disappeared.

"What is this?"

Detective Chen looked at the broken lock on the heirloom box, then at the documents on the floor.

"Victoria Bennett, step away from the balcony."

Victoria gave a brittle laugh.

"This is a private family event."

"Not anymore."

Guests moved backward as the officers approached.

Mark's uncle Robert lowered his champagne glass.

His cousin Allison covered her mouth.

Even the attorney who had come to supervise the estate meeting looked shaken.

Victoria tightened her grip on the box.

"You can't arrest me because my brother is throwing a tantrum."

Detective Chen removed a folded document from her coat.

"We have a warrant connected to the burglary at Mark Bennett's residence."

Victoria looked at Mark.

"You called the police on your own sister?"

Mark stared back at her.

"You broke into my house."

"You can't prove that."

"We recovered security footage."

For the first time that evening, Victoria said nothing.

Detective Chen continued.

"We also recovered a glove from the rear office window."

Victoria's eyes flickered.

Mark noticed.

So did the detective.

"The glove contained trace material matching the broken glass, and we found a partial fingerprint on the cabinet where the estate documents were kept."

Victoria slowly lowered the heirloom box.

Then she smiled.

It was the same cold smile Mark remembered from childhood whenever she had been caught doing something cruel.

"You think this changes the inheritance?"

Mark's attorney, Daniel Ross, stepped forward.

"It changes quite a lot."

Victoria turned toward him.

Daniel picked up one of the papers Victoria had dropped.

"This document claims Harold Bennett transferred his controlling interest in Bennett Holdings to you six weeks before his death."

"He did."

Daniel looked at her.

"No, he didn't."

Victoria's chin lifted.

"You weren't there."

"No, but I was his attorney."

A murmur moved through the room.

Victoria's expression hardened.

Daniel held up the document.

"This isn't the amendment Harold signed."

Victoria looked toward the doors.

One officer quietly moved into her path.

Daniel continued.

"The actual amendment was executed fourteen months ago."

Mark felt a strange chill.

He had never heard about an amendment.

Daniel looked at him.

"Your father changed the trust, Mark."

Victoria suddenly shouted.

"Don't say another word."

Every face turned toward her.

That reaction told Mark more than Daniel's statement had.

Victoria knew what the real amendment said.

Detective Chen stepped closer.

"Place the box on the table."

Victoria hesitated.

Then she slammed it down.

"Fine."

An officer took her wrist.

Victoria jerked away.

"Don't touch me."

"Ma'am, turn around."

"This family belongs to me."

Nobody answered.

The officer secured one wrist.

Victoria looked directly at Mark as the second cuff clicked shut.

"You think you won because you brought police into Father's house?"

Mark shook his head.

"This was never about winning."

Victoria's eyes moved toward the staircase.

Mark followed her gaze.

At the top stood his eight-year-old daughter, Sophie.

She had been brought downstairs by Mark's aunt only moments earlier.

She wore a blue cardigan over her white dress and held the railing with both hands.

She had heard everything.

Mark's heart tightened.

Victoria stared at the little girl.

Then she said the words that silenced the entire room.

"That child is the reason your father turned against me."

Mark started toward Sophie.

"No."

Victoria's voice rose.

"Tell her, Mark."

"That's enough."

"Tell her what Grandpa Harold really left her."

Sophie looked frightened.

Mark climbed the stairs and pulled his daughter against him.

Victoria laughed softly as the officers began leading her toward the entrance.

"You don't even know, do you?"

Mark stopped.

Daniel Ross looked down at the papers in his hand.

His expression was grim.

Victoria noticed.

Her smile widened.

"Ask your attorney."

The doors opened.

Cold night air swept through the hall.

Victoria glanced over her shoulder one final time.

"Ask him why your precious daughter inherited the one thing I spent my entire life waiting for."

Then the police took Victoria outside.

Mark stood on the staircase with Sophie trembling against him.

Below them, Daniel quietly closed the heirloom box.

"Mark."

Mark looked at him.

"What did my father leave Sophie?"

Daniel hesitated.

"The answer is inside this box."
