Chapter 7 - THE BUILDING BY THE RIVER

Rain hammered the windshield as Mark followed Detective Chen's unmarked vehicle toward the old factory district.

The abandoned Bennett administration building appeared beyond the trees.

Three stories of red brick stood beside the black river.

Mark remembered visiting it with Harold when he was twelve.

His father had shown him the first office their grandfather ever used.

"Never be ashamed of where something started," Harold had told him.

Now the windows were dark.

A side door hung open.

Police entered first.

Mark remained beneath the awning with Daniel.

For nearly ten minutes, all they heard was rain.

Then a flashlight appeared behind a second-floor window.

Someone moved quickly.

An officer shouted inside.

Another voice answered.

A crash followed.

Seconds later, a man burst through a rear emergency exit.

He ran toward the river.

Two officers tackled him before he reached the fence.

Mark recognized him.

Nathan Cole.

Samuel Price's executive assistant.

Chen brought him back beneath the building lights.

Nathan's clothes were covered with dust.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.

He kept repeating the same sentence.

"I was told to retrieve company records."

Chen held up a crowbar.

"At midnight?"

Nathan stopped talking.

Inside the building, investigators discovered three archive cabinets forced open.

Several boxes had been emptied.

One old floor safe showed fresh scratches around the lock.

Daniel studied it.

"That's what he was after."

The safe was built into the wall of Harold's grandfather's original office.

Nobody knew the combination.

A locksmith arrived.

Forty minutes later, the door opened.

The safe was empty.

Mark stared inside.

"No covenant."

Daniel crouched.

"Maybe Nathan already found it."

Police searched Nathan.

Nothing.

His car contained empty folders and burglary tools but no legal document.

Then Mark noticed words scratched into the steel inside the safe.

H.B. 1954.

Harold Bennett had not been born until 1957.

"That's not Dad."

Daniel looked closer.

"Henry Bennett."

Mark's grandfather.

Beneath the initials was another engraving.

REMEMBER THE FLOOR.

Mark looked down.

The office had original oak boards.

One board near the desk was darker than the others.

An officer removed it carefully.

Underneath was a narrow cavity.

Inside lay a metal cylinder wrapped in oilcloth.

Daniel stared.

"Nobody touch it."

A crime scene technician photographed everything before lifting the cylinder.

Inside was a rolled document.

The paper was yellowed.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Henry Bennett.

Two witnesses had signed beneath it.

Daniel read silently.

Then he sat down.

Mark's impatience broke.

"What does it say?"

Daniel looked up.

"Your grandfather created a restriction on the controlling shares."

"What restriction?"

"If fraud, coercion, or criminal conduct is used to manipulate succession, the controlling shares automatically move into a protected descendant trust."

Mark stared.

"For Sophie?"

"Not specifically."

Daniel continued reading.

"For the youngest living direct descendant under twenty-one."

Mark felt cold.

That was Sophie.

Victoria's forgery had not merely failed.

If the covenant remained legally valid, her attempt to steal the inheritance may have triggered the exact clause that permanently removed her from control.

Daniel almost smiled.

"Victoria may have handed Sophie the company herself."

A phone rang behind them.

It belonged to Nathan.

Chen removed it from an evidence bag.

The screen showed SAMUEL PRICE.

Everyone became silent.

Chen answered.

"Mr. Cole's phone."

There was a pause.

Then Samuel's voice.

"Who is this?"

"Detective Laura Chen."

The line went dead.

Chen looked at Mark.

"He's running."

They reached Samuel's house thirty minutes later.

He was gone.

His safe was open.

His passport was missing.

On his desk sat a printed flight confirmation.

Departure time was 6:20 the next morning.

Destination.

Zurich.

But Mark noticed something strange.

Samuel was too careful to leave his actual escape plan on a desk.

He looked at Detective Chen.

"This ticket is fake."

"Why?"

"Because Samuel wants us looking at the airport."

Mark remembered the photographs.

The hidden accounts.

The warning about Sophie.

Then he remembered something else.

Samuel owned a private cabin across the state line.

Five hours by car.

Near Lake Mercer.

Mark's phone suddenly vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

COME TO THE CABIN ALONE.

Then a second message arrived.

May you like

It was a photograph of Gerald Pike tied to a chair.
