Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Blanket

"What did they do to you?"
Alexander Ashford's voice cracked as he knelt beside the hospital bed.
His wife, Charlotte, couldn't answer.
She simply pulled the blanket back over her legs as if hiding the bruises would somehow erase them.
Alexander gently stopped her.
"No," he whispered. "Don't hide from me."
Tears streamed down Charlotte's cheeks.
"I didn't want you to see."
His fingers hovered over the enormous purple bruises wrapped around both thighs.
They weren't ordinary bruises.
Several formed nearly identical circles, as though strong hands had gripped her over and over again.
Others ran in long, dark lines across the backs of her legs.
Someone hadn't merely hurt her.
Someone had restrained her.
Alexander slowly stood.
Across the room, his mother, Victoria Ashford, remained perfectly composed.
She adjusted the sleeve of her expensive beige suit.
"Pregnancy complications," she said calmly.
"The nurses had to stabilize her."
Alexander looked toward Charlotte.
She immediately shook her head.
"No..."
His heart stopped.
"They said if I told you..." she whispered.
"They said our baby wouldn't survive."
The room became deathly quiet.
Victoria's calm expression never changed.
"She's confused because of the medication."
Alexander walked toward his mother.
Every step echoed through the private hospital suite.
"What medication?"
"The doctors know what's best."
"I didn't ask the doctors."
His voice turned dangerously quiet.
"I asked you."
For the first time, Victoria hesitated.
Alexander reached for the bedside chart.
Half the pages were missing.
The remaining records showed unusually high doses of sedatives.
Signed by physicians he had never met.
He pressed the emergency call button.
Within seconds, two nurses entered.
Alexander held up the chart.
"Who authorized these medications?"
The nurses exchanged terrified glances.
Neither answered.
Victoria smiled faintly.
"This conversation is over."
"No," Alexander replied.
"It has only just begun."
Thirty minutes later, the hospital director arrived personally.
Alexander demanded complete medical records.
The director looked uncomfortable.
"I'm afraid certain files have been restricted."
"Restricted by whom?"
Silence.
Then...
"Mrs. Victoria Ashford."
Alexander stared at his mother.
"You've been controlling my wife's medical treatment?"
Victoria folded her hands elegantly.
"I was protecting this family's future."
Charlotte suddenly burst into tears.
"They tied my wrists..."
Everyone froze.
"I begged them to let me call you."
"They said your mother gave the orders."
Alexander turned slowly toward Victoria.
His face had become completely unreadable.
Then he removed the Ashford family signet ring from his finger.
The ring his father had given him before he died.
He placed it on the table between them.
"You're no longer speaking to your son."
"You're speaking to the CEO of Ashford Holdings."
May you like
"And from this moment forward..."
"You answer to me."
