Chapter 3: The Empire Falls

The arrest of Victoria Ashford dominated every news broadcast.
Former employees began contacting investigators.
One after another.
A former housekeeper admitted Victoria had secretly installed cameras throughout the mansion.
A retired family attorney produced revised trust documents.
If Charlotte died during childbirth...
Victoria would become temporary guardian of the Ashford heir until Alexander remarried.
Another witness revealed Victoria had already interviewed private nannies before Charlotte was even hospitalized.
Everything had been planned.
Months in advance.
The courtroom overflowed with reporters.
Victoria maintained her elegance.
Until Charlotte testified.
"I thought I was going crazy."
"They kept telling me I imagined everything."
"They said bruises happened because I struggled."
She rolled up her hospital gown just enough for the jury to see photographs of the injuries.
Then she quietly said,
"They weren't protecting my baby."
"They were preparing to take my baby."
The courtroom remained silent.
Then Detective Monroe introduced the final piece of evidence.
A recorded conversation.
Victoria's own voice.
"If Charlotte doesn't survive, Alexander will grieve."
"But grief fades."
"The child stays."
Victoria closed her eyes.
For the first time...
She realized she had lost.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on every major charge.
As deputies led her away in handcuffs, she turned toward Alexander.
"I did all of this for our family."
Alexander answered without emotion.
May you like
"No."
"You destroyed it."
