CHAPTER 2 — THE TRUTH BEFORE THE LAWYERS

Christopher carried Emma into the library, wrapping her in a warm blanket while the family physician examined her.

The little girl refused to let go of his hand.

"Daddy..."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"Are you going to send me away?"

Christopher's heart broke.

He knelt beside her.

"No."

"I should have protected you much sooner."

Outside the library, the Pierce family gathered in tense silence.

His mother, Estelle, descended the staircase with perfect composure.

"This is becoming an embarrassment," she said coolly.

Christopher slowly stood.

"No."

"The embarrassment is that my daughter was afraid in her own home."

Estelle folded her arms.

"You have one recording."

"It proves nothing."

Christopher nodded toward the doorway.

"Then perhaps the lawyers can help."

The family's legal counsel entered carrying a sealed file.

"Mr. Pierce," the senior attorney said, "at your request, we reviewed your father's confidential estate documents."

He placed the file on the table.

"Your late father anticipated that conflicts over Emma's inheritance might arise."

Estelle's expression changed for the first time.

The attorney continued.

"He included a handwritten letter."

Christopher unfolded it carefully.

His father's words filled the silent room.

"If anyone ever threatens this child's safety for financial gain, they are to receive nothing further from my estate."

The attorney looked directly at Estelle.

"The clause applies to every beneficiary."

Even her confidence faltered.
