Chapter 11 - The Price of Betrayal

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
“What?”
Vanessa wiped her face.
Mom moved toward her.
“Stop talking.”
Vanessa stepped away.
“You said he deserved to know.”
“I said stop.”
I looked at my sister.
“How did she pay you?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She didn’t hand me an envelope, Daniel.”
“She helped us.”
“Dental office.”
“Tuition.”
“Vacations.”
“Whenever I agreed with her about Emily, things became easier.”
My stomach turned.
“You’re blaming Mom for your behavior?”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I’m telling you I knew what I was doing.”
That was somehow worse.
She continued.
“Mom hated Emily from the beginning.”
“She thought you were changing.”
“You stopped coming every weekend.”
“You stopped fixing every problem immediately.”
“You started saying no.”
I looked at Emily.
She understood before I did.
Mom did not hate Emily merely because of where she came from.
She hated what Emily taught me.
Boundaries.
Vanessa looked at our mother.
“She said if Emily was gone, Daniel would become himself again.”
I almost laughed.
“Myself?”
Mom finally exploded.
“You were my son before you were her husband.”
The room went silent.
There it was.
Thirteen years of grief.
Control.
Obligation.
Possession.
All inside one sentence.
I spoke quietly.
“And that never changed.”
“Yes, it did.”
“You changed.”
“I grew up.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I got married.”
“You replaced your family.”
“No.”
My voice rose for the first time.
“I built one.”
Mom looked as if I had slapped her.
Emily touched my arm.
Not to stop me.
To steady me.
I turned to Vanessa.
“What exactly did you do?”
She hesitated.
Then confessed.
She had criticized Emily constantly.
Encouraged Mom to question her parenting.
Asked Lily leading questions.
Suggested Mom document anything “concerning.”
And three months earlier, Vanessa had sent Mom the name of a private investigator.
Emily stiffened.
“Why?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“To find something on you.”
My blood turned cold.
“Did they?”
“No.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
“He said you were boring.”
Emily stared at her.
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily did not answer.
Some apologies arrive too late to deserve immediate relief.
Then the front door opened again.
Scott walked in.
Vanessa’s husband.
He looked at the papers.
Then at Vanessa.
“What did you tell them?”
May you like
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
And I realized there was still another secret in the room.
