Chapter 12 - Scott Knew Too

Scott closed the dining-room door behind him.

He did not greet anyone.

He walked directly toward Vanessa.

“What did you tell them?”

“The truth.”

His jaw tightened.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Vanessa looked confused.

Scott turned toward me.

“The dental office money was not forty-eight thousand.”

Mark frowned.

“The transfer says forty-eight.”

“That was the first transfer.”

I felt a new wave of dread.

Scott sat down.

“There were three.”

The total was nearly ninety thousand dollars.

He had known the money came from Margaret.

He claimed he did not know it came from the trust.

I did not believe him.

Mark did not either.

“You never asked?”

Mark said.

Scott rubbed both hands across his face.

“I asked once.”

“And?”

“She said it belonged to the family.”

“That phrase again.”

Emily’s voice was tired.

Everyone had apparently been living inside the same convenient lie.

Family money.

A phrase vague enough to erase ownership.

Responsibility.

Permission.

Scott looked at me.

“I can repay it.”

“Good.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“With what?”

He did not answer.

And suddenly her panic made sense.

The successful dentist.

The expensive house.

The private school.

The immaculate Christmas clothes.

It was all less stable than Vanessa wanted anyone to know.

Scott’s practice had been struggling for years.

Credit cards were heavily used.

Their home had a second mortgage.

Vanessa, the woman who judged Emily’s childhood poverty, was terrified of becoming poor herself.

Emily looked at her for a long time.

Then she said,

“You weren’t disgusted by where I came from.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You were terrified you might end up there.”

No one spoke.

Vanessa looked away.

Emily had found the wound beneath the cruelty.

It did not excuse anything.

But it explained more than Vanessa wanted exposed.

Mom suddenly stood.

“This conversation is over.”

“No.”

I remained seated.

“For you, maybe.”

“You will return those documents.”

“No.”

“I am the trustee.”

“You were.”

Her face hardened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Mark and I are getting professional advice.”

Fear flashed across her eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

Then she pointed at Emily.

“If you do this, the entire family will know she caused it.”

I stood slowly.

“Then I’ll tell them the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That you slapped my wife.”

“That you manipulated my daughter.”

“That you hid our father’s trust.”

“And that you spent years trying to destroy my marriage because you could not tolerate losing control of me.”

Mom stared at me.

Then, very quietly, she said,

“If you walk out now, don’t ever come back.”

I looked at Emily.

Then Mark.

Then Vanessa.

And finally my mother.

“You already threw my family out on Christmas.”

May you like

I picked up the documents.

“I’m just respecting your decision.”
