Chapter 5 - The First Boundary

Mom finally reached me that evening.

I answered because I wanted her to hear my voice.

“Daniel.”

The relief in hers was immediate.

“Oh, thank God.”

Then she began crying.

I let her.

For years, tears had been Mom’s most effective weapon.

Not because they were always fake.

That was what made them powerful.

She genuinely felt hurt whenever anyone resisted her.

“Please come home.”

“No.”

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

“We do.”

“Then come here.”

“No.”

Silence.

She was not used to hearing the word twice.

“I will talk to you over the phone.”

Her crying stopped.

“What has Emily been saying to you?”

There it was.

Not concern.

Not shame.

Emily.

Again.

“Nothing.”

“I know how she is when she gets upset.”

“No, Mom.”

“You don’t.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I apologized.”

“You blamed Emily in the apology.”

“I said I was sorry.”

“And then explained why everyone else caused you to hit her.”

She sighed.

“You’re twisting my words.”

“I’m finally listening to them.”

That silenced her.

Then I asked the question.

“What was in Dad’s trust?”

Nothing.

Not even breathing.

For almost five seconds, the line went completely silent.

Then Mom spoke.

“Who told you about that?”

I closed my eyes.

She did not ask what trust.

She asked who told me.

My answer came quietly.

“You just did.”

“Daniel, it’s complicated.”

“Where is the money?”

“The money was used for the family.”

“What family?”

“Us.”

“Did Mark agree?”

Silence.

“Did I?”

More silence.

Then her tone changed.

“Your father left me in an impossible position.”

I looked at Emily.

She was standing at the kitchen counter holding a mug she had forgotten to drink from.

“Did you take money that belonged to Mark and me?”

“I managed it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I kept that house.”

“I paid medical bills.”

“I helped Vanessa when she was struggling.”

I nearly laughed.

Vanessa had spent years mocking Emily for using coupons.

And apparently, part of Vanessa’s polished life had been financed with money taken from the brother whose wife she called trailer trash.

“Mom.”

My voice was calm.

“You will not contact Emily.”

“What?”

“You will not contact Lily.”

“Daniel, she is my granddaughter.”

“You will not contact her.”

“You cannot keep my granddaughter from me.”

“Watch me.”

Her breathing changed.

Then she said something I had never expected from my mother.

“If you do this, I will fight you.”

I looked toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.

“For what?”

“My family.”

That was the moment I realized Mom still did not understand.

She thought I was taking her family away.

She had never considered that Emily and Lily were mine.
